Arch rivals Barbe and Sulphur will get a rare third matchup on the soccer pitch this season.
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association released its soccer playoff brackets Sunday. The No. 6 Tors (18-2-2) will host the No. 27 Bucs (7-10-3) on today at 7:15 p.m. in the first round of the Division I boys soccer playoffs.
“It is interesting,” Sulphur head coach Trevor Foolkes said. “It is not too often you play a team three times in a season. We are excited to make the playoffs.”
Barely a week ago, the Tors needed four second-half goals to beat the Bucs 4-2 and seal its first district championship in 21 years. Foolkes is hoping the Tors can avoid a slow start this time and build off its 2-2 tie with Division II No. 1 St. Thomas More Saturday.
“We have to play like we did in the second half against Barbe and how we played yesterday against STM,” Foolkes said. “We have to play our regular type of soccer. I don’t know if we were still excited from the Southside game or didn’t take it serious enough. We will be focused for Tuesday.”
The Bucs will make their first postseason appearance since 2019. Barbe is looking for its first playoff since 2017.
“I am just happy to get the boys in the playoffs,” Barbe head coach Todd Hoffpauir said. “That was our goal this year to get them back in.
“I know they are a really good team, and it is going to take an unbelievable effort to beat them on their home field. We did pretty well in the first half. The game plan worked, then we went away from the game plan, and they were able to capitalize on every mistake we made. We frustrated them for 40 minutes, but we have to do it for the entire game.”
Hoffpauir will pull double-duty Tuesday as the head coach of the Barbe boys and girls soccer teams. At 5 p.m., the seven-ranked Barbe girls (18-4-3) host No. 26 Airline (11-10-4) in their eighth consecutive postseason appearance.
Fresh off winning their respective district championships, the St. Louis Catholic boys and girls teams received byes in the first round.
The St. Louis boys (15-5-5) have the area’s top seed at No. 5 in Division III and will host the winner out of No. 12 North Vermilion (12-7-1) and No. 21 Cecilia (7-7-2). The Saints are 8-0-1 in their last nine games. The St. Louis girls (12-6-4), ranked sixth in Division III, will take on the winner out of No. 11 West Feliciana (14-7-1) and No. 22 Brusly (5-10). The Saints have lost one game in their last 12.
In Division II, the No. 9 Leesville boys (15-6-2) will host No. 24 Lutcher (7-12-2) today at 5:30 p.m.
DeRidder and South Beauregard drew home games in the first round of the Division III girls playoffs. No. 12 DeRidder (6-11-4) will host district rival Leesville (10-9-3) at 7 p.m. today, while No. 14 South Beauregard (13-9-5) plays No. 19 Pearl River (8-8-1) at 5:30 p.m.
