Oberlin rejects new waterworks millage

OBERLIN — Voters in Oberlin turned down a new millage Saturday that would have generated revenue to assist the town with maintenance and operations of its waterworks and sewage collection systems and other services.

In unofficial results from the Secretary of State’s Office, 60 percent of voters rejected the new 10-year, 15 mill-tax dedicated to the maintenance and operations of the facilities by a vote of 104-68.

The tax would have generated about $88,861 annually with 60 percent of the funds being used by the town for “any lawful purpose.” The remaining 40 percent will fund the maintenance, improvement and operations of the waterworks system and the sewage collection and disposal system.

Voter turnout was 15 percent.

In a separate measure, rural voters in Allen Parish Fire Protection District 4 in the Kinder area approved the continuance of a 10-year, 7.10 mill tax for improvement and maintenance of fire protection facilities and equipment, including obtaining water.

Unofficial results show the measure passed 17 -36, with 83 percent of the voters in favor of the continuance.

The tax, which represents a .13 mills increase over the 6.97 currently collected, will generate $198,000 per year.

Voter turnout was 6 percent.
