It won’t get any easier for the McNeese State men’s basketball team.
After Seattle (7-1) beat the Cowboys 78-62 Wednesday night, they now try to turn their six-game road trip around against undefeated Wyoming (7-0).
Wyoming is outscoring its opponents by 23.8 points a game.
“They are a really skilled team that does a lot of things right,” said McNeese head coach John Aiken about Wyoming. “They are a different type of team, physical and really like to get the ball inside.
“They are huge and like to play that way. They like to post up both their center and their point guard.”
The point guard is 6-foot-7 Hunter Maldonado, who averages 18.7 points a game. He has one 3-point field goal, doing most of his work in and around the paint.
Maldonado is one of five Wyoming players averaging double digits. Power forward Ike Graham (6-9) leads Wyoming in scoring at 21.1 points per game.
“They will remind you of a Big Ten team with the way they play,” Aiken said.
McNeese (3-5), which is 0-4 on the road and has lost its last two games, is led by 7-1 center Brendan Medley-Bacon (11.9 ppg). Myles Lewis (11.3 ppg) is the only other Cowboy scoring in double figures.
“We will have to try and speed them up if we can,” Aiken said. “They don’t like to play fast. We want to get them out of their comfort zone.”
The Cowboys will need to improve their ball handling if they want to have a chance, Aiken said. The Cowboys have averaged 20.8 turnovers a game.
“Turnovers and free throws have hurt us,” he said. “We have to take care of the ball better.
“We are a bunch of guys who have never played together and we are making adjustments. There is not a great comfort at times and we are sorting things out.”
McNeese is looking to keep improving and looking to get its offense going, Aiken said.
“Trying to find a rhythm and a comfort zone for us to play in,” he said. “That will help us down the road.”
