Max Johnson is still LSU’s starting quarterback and backup Garrett Nussmeier might still redshirt this season.
Welcome to LSU’s version of As the Quarterback Room Turns.
It probably doesn’ matter this week with the Tigers (4-6, 2-5 SEC) hosting UL-Monroe as a 28-point favorite.
But just last week Nussmeier had decided against redshirting and played all but the first two series of the Tigers’ 16-13 overtime loss to Arkansas.
The results were mixed.
“I don’t think that Max deserves to be benched,” head coach Ed Orgeron said Monday. “I don’t feel like Garrett beat Max out.”
Johnson was 3-of-6 for 21 yards in his brief appearance. Nussmeier was 18 for 31 for 179 yards with a touchdown and two costly interceptions after taking over.
Orgeron stressed that he decides who plays — even when both of his quarterbacks’ dads played the position in the NFL — but does get input from players and their families on whether they should redshirt.
Last week Nussmeier’s dad, current Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback coach Doug, let the coaching staff know that Garrett didn’t really care to redshirt.
So the true freshman played most of last week’s game, throwing for a touchdown on wild scramble and leading the Tigers to a pair of field goals.
But he also threw two costly interceptions, including one in overtime that allowed Arkansas to play it safe for an easy game-winning field goal.
“I gave him a chance to beat (Johnson) out,” Orgeron said. “The touchdown play he made was a phenomenal play, but we were also minus-three in turnovers, and only scored seven points.
“So Max is still our starter.”
If Nussmeier plays in another game, it would be his fifth appearance and blow his chance to redshirt and not lose a year of eligibility.
“It’s going to be up to Garrett and his father,” Orgeron said, “whether they want to redshirt or if they want to play in a backup role and perhaps go in a game and if he plays better, keep him in.
“If I were him, I’d redshirt. There’s only two games left, but that’s not my decision.”
MORE INJURIES: The Tigers lost another player for the season against Arkansas when left tackle Cam Wire went down with an injury
“I don’t think he’s going to play the rest of the season,” Orgeron said.
The Tigers were also missing both starting guards, Ed Ingram and Chasen Hines against the Razorbacks.
Ingram missed the game with a concussion and could possibly return this week.
