LAFAYETTE — Iota got its offense going in the second set but couldn’t sustain long enough on Thursday at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state volleyball tournament at the Cajundome.

No. 4 St. Michael the Archangel swept No. 5 Iota 25-22, 25-20, 25-16 in the Division III quarterfinals.

“We worked well, and we battled to the end,” Iota head coach Meredith Hebert said. “But I really would have like to hit a lot more and be in offense a lot more.”

It was (23-19) Iota’s first trip to the state tournament since 2016 and its first 20-win season since 2018.

“Our team was pretty awesome this season,” Hebert said. “We worked together well. Some games didn’t fall in our favor, but for the most part, we were all pretty sound.”

Iota never led in the first set but made adjustments in the second to jump out to a 4-1 on back-to-back kills by Leah Hebert and Chloe Cooley. Iota kept it up with Hebert setting Chloe Bordelon up for a kill from the left side for a 16-14 lead. But St. Michael (23-8) rallied with a 10-1 run with Melinda Jones getting a key block for a 24-17 lead.

“We started hitting the ball more (in the second set),” Hebert said. “But what caused our loss in the first and third set is we didn’t put the ball down enough. Serve-receive hurt us quite a bit. We didn’t set the ball up like we should have.”

Senior outside hitter Charly Sensat led Iota with nine kills, and Bordelon finished with six kills. Leah Hebert had 15 assists, and Annsley Gatte added 13 digs.

Audrey Doming (7) and Kennedy Strickland (5) combined for 12 kills for St. Michael, and Nichole Benigno had a match-high 20 digs.
