The 38th Avenue of Flags display will be out on Veterans Day this Thursday and will include 1,108 military casket flags at Orange Grove-Graceland Cemetery, 2023 Broad St.

Flags will be installed at 6 a.m. and will be taken down at 4 p.m. Residents can walk, bike or drive through the display.

“That’s what makes the display so unique,” said Ted Harless, Avenue of Flags director. “There may be at least 1,000 cars that will drive through there.”

Avenue of Flags is also installed for Memorial Day, with the display being made up of flags donated from families of fallen soldiers. He said the flags represent veterans from all military branches that served the United States and may not have fought in a war.

“We’ve got a ton of 48-star flags, and we’re still getting them,” Harless said. “We’ve got flags of soldiers who died on the first days of World War II and World War I.”

New to this year’s display is a history walk that will have roughly eight different American flags, Harless said. Each flag will have a sign with a description, along with a QR code that can be scanned to learn more about its history.

Harless said the history walk wasn’t available in years past because the road on the cemetery had older oak trees with low-hanging limbs that made it difficult to display the flags. Hurricane Laura’s Category 4 winds uprooted many trees throughout the cemetery and allowed for the 9.5-foot flags and 12-foot poles to be installed along the road. He said the history walk is a project through the Eagle Scouts.

Harless said he is seeking 200 volunteers each to install and put away the flags. He said installing the flags takes an hour, while it takes 90 minutes to take them down.
