Newton “Sonny” Blanchard Powell Jr.

Newton Blanchard “Sonny” Powell, Jr. passed away on August 13, 2021 having succumbed to complications from COVID-19 at the age of 86. Born March 1, 1935 in Natchitoches, he was a graduate of Northwestern State University, lifelong civil servant, and retired from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.
He was preceded in death by his wife Connie Sue Powell, parents Newton Blanchard Powell and Marie Weaver Powell, and a son, Richard Brooks Powell.
He is survived by his brother Brooks Weaver “Bubba” Powell, Ashland, son Thomas Blanchard “Tommy” Powell (Holly), Baton Rouge, and grandchildren Laura Marie Powell Decou (Mike), Arlington, Texas, and Amy Elizabeth Powell, Baton Rouge. He is also survived by Connie’s children Tony Hogan, Jeff Hogan (Ana), Tim Hogan (Kim), Sonia Hogan, Fonda Moseley (Paxton), Rhonda Guin (Gerald), and Robbie Gardner (Damon), and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service conducted by Brother Robert Earl Bamberg will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, at Hathorn Cemetery, Ashland, La. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Ashland Lodge No. 196.
