Portal calls, Brennan leaves Tigers with one year left

Nobody can ever accuse Myles Brennan of bolting at the first hint of adversity.

But the LSU quarterback’s hard luck saga finally reached critical mass this season and the fifth-year senior will enter the transfer portal to find a place for his final year of eligibility.

Brennan made the announcement on Twitter shortly after head coach Ed Orgeron confirmed the report at his weekly press luncheon to preview this week’s game at Alabama.

“It was a dream to come to LSU and wear the purple and gold, but now is the time to move on and start a new chapter,” Brennan said on the social media outlet. “This is one of the hardest decisions I have ever made, but I know in my heart it’s time. I leave knowing that since the moment I stepped on campus, I gave everything to coach Orgeron and my brothers. I will be a Tiger for life and will never forget the memories from my time in Baton Rouge.”

Orgeron said Brennan was “teary-eyed” when he met with him.

“He thought that he just needed to find a place that he felt like he could go play for one year and start,” Orgeron said.

Orgeron said he told Brennan to “Hold you head high. You gave your best for LSU, you graduated from LSU.”

Brennan wasn’t likely to play this season anyway, Orgeron said, although the Tigers originally hoped to get him back around this point in the season.

“I knew he wasn’t ready,” Orgeron said. “I knew his rehab was taking a little bit longer and he had some other things … a knee that was hurt and stuff like that.”

Max Johnson has performed fairly well after ultimately winning the job in Brennan’s absence last season, but there is a complication with backup Garrett Nussmeier.

If LSU wants to redshirt him — and Orgeron says the Tigers do — then he can only play in one more game this season.

Otherwise, LSU’s open date left this season’s chronic injury line up a little more encouraging as the 28-point underdog Tigers (4-4, 2-3 SEC) prepare for the annual grudge match against Alabama.

Offensive lineman Chasen Hines and receiver Devonta Lee will be back this week along with running back Tre Bradford.

LSU’s quarterback room should crowd up next season with the addition of recruiting commitment of 5-star Walker Howard of Lafayette, the son of former Tiger quarterback Jamie Howard.

But Brennan won’t be there.

A highly touted 4-star recruit out of Long Beach, Miss., who redshirted his freshman season, Brennan’s path to playing time was blocked for two seasons by Heisman trophy winner Joe Burrow and the last two by freak injuries.

“He was very patient,” Orgeron said. “He waited his turn. I thought he played very good last year, he was very accurate … I thought he was going to have a great year. Unfortunately he got hurt and got hurt again this year.”

Brennan started the first three games of last season — throwing for 11 touchdowns — before suffering an abdominal injury that confounded the medical community. He ultimately decided against surgery, let it heal on its own, and was ready to compete with Johnson for the job this year. But then he slipped on a fishing dock and broke his left (non-throwing) forearm just days before August practice started.

I am grateful for the support through the ups and downs from LSU fans and especially my incredible family,” Brennan said. “I look forward to what is next and finding the best fit to help me achieve my dream of being an NFL quarterback.”

“I thought he played great before he got hurt,” Orgeron said. “I hope what happened to with Joe Burrow happens for Myles. He wants to play pro ball. I hope he gets his shot.”
