IOWA — Lake Charles College Prep’s winning streak against district foes survived — by one point and 3 yards — in the Trailblazers’ 27-26 District 4-3A win over Iowa Friday night.

The win extended LCCP’s (6-3, 4-0) streak to 14 consecutive wins over district opponents. The loss was the first of the season for the Yellow Jackets (8-1, 3-1).

The Jackets went for 2 after pulling within a point on a 32-yard pass from Koltin Lebleu to Cole Corbello with 2:20 left. The swing pass to star receiver Curtis Deville was stuffed by the Blazers defense.

Iowa head coach Tommy Johns said he was leery of trying an extra-point kick.

“We had already gotten one blocked and we had some guys injured that are normally on our field goal team,” he said. “I was nervous about our protection and felt we had a better chance (going for it). Any time we have an opportunity to get the ball into Curtis’ hands, we are going to do it. Those plays have won games for us, too. That’s not the reason we lost the game. It came down to a number of things.”

The Jackets had one more chance after recovering the ensuing onside kick at their own 49-yard line. They drove to the Blazers 23-yard line, but on fourth-and-3, LeBleu was hurried by Blazers linebacker Daylon Sibley and his pass fell incomplete.

Prep had four sacks in the second half, including three in a row — by Erick Franklin Jr., Ian Richard and Sibley — on one Iowa possession.

Prep never trailed. Iowa tied the score at 20-20 on a 2-yard run by Ronald Young in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but Keshlon Jackson returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown.

“They didn’t kick it to me the whole first half, but when they did in the second half I felt I had a chance to score, and God’s will, I scored to put my team back on top,” Jackson said. “This win means a lot. It was a good game.”

Prep coach Erick Franklin said his team played better as the game went on.

“I thought we ran the ball well in the second half, played some really good defense,” he said. “We made some big plays on third down. The kids played a great game. We made it harder than it should have been sometimes.”

Franklin said he’s proud of the Blazers’ streak.

“We expect to win the district,” he said. “We’ve won the district for four years, ain’t nothing changing.”

After a scoreless first quarter the teams alternated touchdowns in the third quarter with Prep opening the scoring on a 14-yard run down the right sideline by quarterback Josiah Bushnell, who spun away from a defender at the 6-yard line.

Bushnell connected with Elijah Garrick on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 4 seconds left in the second quarter to give the Blazers a 14-7 lead at the break.

Between the Blazers’ scores, Iowa got on the board with a 1-yard plunge by Lebleu.

In the third quarter, Lebleu scored on a 60-yard run and Prep’s Devonte Guidroz scored on a 30-yard run.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our kids. We got every ounce out of them for sure,” Johns said.
