Game on Welsh, Hamilton determined to play

The show got on for Welsh and Hamilton Christian, with only a change in location taking place due to Tropical Storm Nicholas.
The Thursday night high school football game, technically a Hamilton home game, was moved to Welsh and still on as of Tuesday afternoon.
“We discussed other possibilities, including moving to Saturday, and are waiting to see how the storm affects us over the next few days,” said Hamilton head coach Dexter Washington.
If the game gets played, it’ll match two teams in good form. Hamilton (1-0) has won four consecutive regular-season games over two seasons, while Welsh (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss to Kinder with a 34-20 win over Vinton.
Running back Cohen Fontenot and quarterback Gabe Gillett lead a Welsh ground game that averages nearly 400 yards per game. They combined for 357 yards last week. Fontenot scored four touchdowns.
“The running back is very physical, a tough running back that looks fast,” Washington said. “The quarterback is very deceptive in what he does. He runs the ball downhill and executes to a T. They are a 1-2 punch. As a team they play hard and physical.”
Hamilton opened its season last week with a 44-21 win at Highland Christian. Washington said he liked the way the team played after a slow start.
“We gave up a touchdown in the first quarter,” he said. “It took us a while to get going since we hadn’t played a game in so long.
“After the first 10 minutes or so, we had a good push from our offensive line, flew around defensively and reacted quickly to save plays with missed assignments.”
Ze’beian Doffney ran for 163 yards and Neiman Sullen completed 6 of 11 passes for two touchdowns to lead the Warriors.
“Doffney could have had more had we blocked a bit better,” Washington said. “We threw the ball well. If we can run the ball, we’ll be able to do what we want on offense.”
