MOSS BLUFF — Sam Houston shook off its opening-week loss in a big way, beating LaGrange 42-13 Thursday night to even its record.
Dennis Gardere ran for two first-half touchdowns and Andrew Glass threw a pair of touchdown passes to Quinton Simon in the first half as the Broncos (1-1) raced to a 28-0 lead.
Gardere ran for 133 yards in the first half, scoring on runs of 3 and 15 yards.
On the first play of the second quarter, Glass found Simon in the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-goal play.
Grant Matheau recovered a Gators fumble on the ensuing kickoff. On the next play, Glass found Simon behind the Gators secondary for a 31-yard touchdown pass.
“We had a lot of different guys playing in different spots,” Broncos head coach Chad Davis said. “They worked hard all week and the outcome was what we wanted. The offensive line played well and set the tone early. In the first drive we had a lot of success running the football.
“Defensively we did a good job of rallying to the ball, tackling as a team. We got good reads and made the right calls.”
The Gators (0-2) put together a sustained drive just before half, but turned the ball over on downs after reaching the Broncos 11-yard line.
Jason Wilson completed 11 of 18 passes for 119 yards in the first half.
The Gators got a pair of second-half touchdowns from running back Keyshawn Doucet, who scored on runs of 4 and 9 yards.
Simon scored a third touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Gavin Stout. Drew Bailey scored on a 9-yard run.
Gardere finished with 189 yards on 21 carries. Glass was 6 of 9 for 68 yards passing, ran for 78 yards and caught a pass for 14 yards.
Wilson finished 20 of 31 for 215 yards. Doucet had 54 yards on 13 carries. Omarion Randolph made five catches for 86 yards.
Bailey ran for 89 yards on 10 carries.
LaGrange travels to Leesville next week. Sam Houston is scheduled to host Thibodaux, which suffered major damage from Hurricane Ida last week.
