Care Help reaches out to battered Southeast La.

Care Help in Sulphur was ready to “pay it forward” two days after Hurricane Ida made landfall at Port Fouchon on Aug. 29.
Care Help Executive Director Jody Farnum and State Rep. Les Farnum, Jody’s brother-in-law, were at Care Help’s Thrift Store Tuesday morning loading supplies assisted by Loretta Lander and Richard DeLyon.
“We received tremendous relief here after the hurricanes,” Farnum said. “Now we’re helping others. That’s how we do things.”
Farnum has been in contact with District 73 State Rep. William “Bill” Wheat and State Rep. Timothy Kerner from District 84. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder is organizing relief efforts from Louisiana voting districts.
Farnum will be driving the first load and operating a chainsaw after he gets there.
“David Misse, Misse’s grocery, has been extremely helpful,” Farnum said. “He sent over a forklift and an employee to operate it, which will make loading the trailer much faster.”
Going on the trailer were bleach, water, sports drinks, toilet paper and gloves. Farnum said the community of Southwest Louisiana has been responsive and in a unique position to known exactly what the hurricane victims of Southeast Louisiana need.
Clothing is not needed for hurricane victims, according to Farnum.
“So many people remember exactly where they were this time last year,” Farnum said.
Tarps and roofing tacks will be going over on the next run. Curries in Hackberry helped by donating.
“It doesn’t matter where these supplies are from or who exactly helped us last year,” Farnum said. “The people of Southeast Louisiana have a dire need. We were blessed last year and now we’re helping.
“I think that’s what Care Help is all about and I think that’s what this community does, helps others without a second thought.”
Sulphur locations for dropping off Hurricane Ida donations, in addition to Care Help, are 4D Outfitters at 1417 Cypress, Exit Real Estate at 2730 Maplewood, George’s House of Flowers at 214 S. Irwin and Business Health Partners at 3649 S. Beglis, On Call Lab Draw at 303 South Huntington, Ward 4 Marshal’s office at 500 Huntington, Custom Millworks at 3861 Hwy. 90 West, Our Lady of Prompt Succor on LaSallette Avenue.
In Moss Bluff, Moss Bluff Pentecostal Church delivered a load of generators, water, gas and ACs to Southeast Louisiana last week.
“They helped us; let’s help them,” said MBPC Pastor Jared Pugh. “We’re a family.”
