In this edition of the Three Point Stance, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux discuss Week 1 big school football games.
What is the most interesting game for an area Class 3A team?
WA: Lake Charles College Prep at Germantown (Miss.). The Trailblazers hit the road to Madison, Mississippi, to take on a Germantown team that has two Southeastern Conference recruits in running back Branson Robinson (Georgia) and defensive lineman Zxavian Harris (Ole Miss). Prep isn’t short on talent with a half-dozen Division I commitments in its senior class.
RA: South Beauregard at DeRidder. The battle between the two largest schools in Beauregard Parish has been even with each team winning three times in the last six meetings. It will be battle up front where the Dragons rely on their ground game and three return
ing offensive linemen, while the Golden Knights are strong up front on defense, led by linebacker Mason Derouen.
What is the best matchup involving an area Class 5A or 4A team?
WA: Leesville at Jennings. Two of the area’s best players, Jennings RB Trevor Etienne and Leesville RB Caleb Gallashaw meet again. Jennings won 56-41 last year behind a 310-yard, three-TD game from Etienne. Gallashaw also scored three rushing TDs in the game.
RA: Pineville at Sulphur. The Tors defense was strong last week with a shutout of Washington-Marion to close out the preseason. This week they will have to bottle up Pineville senior running back Bruce Jackson, who ran for 323 yards and three TDs in Week 10 last season. It will be the first game between the former district rivals since 1988.
Name a player to watch.
WA: Sam Houston QB Andrew Glass. The Tulane baseball commitment had an impressive gridiron debut last week, throwing two TD passes and scoring on a 49-yard run in the jamboree game against Westlake. The Broncos host West Monroe tonight. The Rebels allowed 14 points per game last season.
RA: Westlake’s Gavyen Carlin. The junior defensive lineman made big stops last week against Sam Houston, including a hit on Broncos QB Andrew Glass last week that stalled a drive on the Rams’ 35-yard line.
