Hurricane Ida made landfall just before noon Sunday as a Category 4 in Port Fourchon with winds near 130 mph.

Donald Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office, said the storm held itself together “pretty well” even after it made landfall.

Jones said Ida’s forward motion slowed mid-afternoon as it made its way northward, which ultimately will exasperate the flash flood threat.

He said their office was expecting the storm to pick up speed as it makes a wide turn northeast into Mississippi.

He said the storm is moving 10 mph and was expected to turn overnight and into Monday.

“We aren’t expecting any areas in Southwest Louisiana to experience anything more than tropical force-storm winds,” he said. “We will have wind gusts of no more than 25-30 mph.”

Southeast Louisiana will continue to be under a tornado threat into today. Highest rain totals of 1-5 inches of rain bands are also possible in that area.
