THREE POINT STANCE: Time to about talk jamborees

In this edition of the Three Point Stance, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux discuss high school football jamborees being played tonight and Friday.

What is the most interesting matchup of large schools?

WA: John Curtis Christian at Jennings, Friday. The Patriots are bouncing back from an unthinkable five-loss season while the Bulldogs are reloading after going 8-1 last season. The game features one of the state’s top running backs, Trevor Etienne of Jennings, against the usually stout John Curtis defense.

RA: Sam Houston vs. Westlake, Friday. The old West Fork Classic will feature a battle in the trenches. Westlake returns four offensive linemen — Garrison Guillory, Bradey Olivier, Jacob Martin and Jackson Hardesty. On the other side will be Broncos defensive linemen O.J. Patterson, Josh Lemonier and Draven Duncan.

What is the best small schools matchup?

WA: Grand Lake at Vinton. It’s the first game of the season, which is reason enough. Plus we get to see the new-look Hornets after their great run to the Class 1A state championship game last season. Vinton has a pair of explosive athletes on offense in Keishawn Budwine and C.J. Jack.

RA: East Beauregard at Merryville. In an early District 4-1A previews East Beauregard’s defensive line of Kaden Lee, Sean Guillory and Forrest Tollett try to contain Merryville running back Cam’ron Williams, a four-year starter who has run for more than 3,000 yards.

Name a player to watch.

WA: Westlake’s Jamaal Guillory is an outstanding athlete who is entering his second season as starting quarterback. His progress as a passer will be one of the keys to the Rams offense.

RA: Iowa’s Curtis Deville will make the switch to running back after leading the Yellow Jackets receiving corps for two years. He will get an early test from Opelousas’ big-time tackles Christian Murphy and Dontay Washington, who combined for 105 tackles last season.
