Mr. and Mrs. Martin Benjamin “M.B.” (Rena Duhon) Franks of DeQuincy will celebrate 70 years of marriage with a luncheon at noon Sunday, March 27, 2011, at Lone Pine Church of Christ in Merryville.

Hosts are their children and spouses, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn (Rita) Whitman of Merryville, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry (Paula) Franks of Natchitoches, Mr. and Mrs. Glen (Ena) Franks and Mr. and Mrs. Darrell (Renee) Treme, all of Lake Charles, and Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm (Theresa) Franks of Florein. The couple has 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Today with spotlight Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic School 1968. Msgr. Irving A. DeBlanc was the pastor of the church at the time.

Pageant winners crowned

Pageant winners from the Lake Charles Black Heritage Festival are Aliesha Lawrence, 4, Tiny Miss; Austin

Rankins, 5, Tiny Mister.

Also, Danielle Marburgh, 6, Little Miss; Ronald Spikes Jr., 7, Little Mister; Carrie Griffin, 9, Petite Miss and Mayla

Renee Soileau, 10, Deb Miss. The pageant was held on March 2.

At the movies

Movies playing in Lake Charles on this date in 1996 were, at the Charles CINEMA III, “Father of the Bride 2,” “Waiting to Exhale,” Grumpier Old Men,” and “American President.” Admission prices were $1.50 matinee and $2.00 after 2 p.m.

The United Artist 10 was showing “Girl 6,” “Up Close & Personal,” “Homeward Bound,” “Ed,” “Race the Sun,” “Birdcage,” “Executive Decision,” “Black Sheep,” “Broken Arrow,” and “Rumble in the Bronx.” Showing at Prien Lake Mall was “Diabolique.”

Features at the Oak Park 6 were “Sense & Sensibility,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” “Dead Man Walking,” “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” “Muppet Treasure Island,” and “If Lucy Fell.” All shows before 6 p.m. were $3.75.

Outstanding knights

Receiving certificates of merit from Calcasieu Council 1207 of the Knights of Columbus were Frank Gallaugher, Guy Bordages, Harry Huber, and Columbus Moss.

The four veteran members were cited for their services to the council, to church, and to the community. Gallaugher, one of two surviving charter members of the council, was recognized for his 64 years as a knight.

Brotherhood Youth Seminar

The third annual Brotherhood Youth Seminar, sponsored by the Lake Charles chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.

Serving on the teenage advisory panel for the seminar are Kathryn Barton, Karen Bray, Matt Goldsmith, Jimmy Gun, Mary Hutchison, Susan Strauss, and Renee Walters.

75 years ago

LC High Jr. Hi-Y

The Lake Charles High Jr. H-Y met at the YMCA Tuesday evening with President Tom McCaughan presiding.

Jasper Owens Jones was voted into the club membership. Following the business meeting, Billy Robinson and Edward Singleton chose teams for a quiz contest led by Jack Lane.

CYO scavenger hunt

Senior CYO members enjoyed a varied evening at the Lake Charles recreation center Sunday which included making rules for a ping-pong tournament and holding a religious quiz and scavenger hunt.

Winners were Barbara Dumesnil, Alverdy Heyd, Clements Heibling Jr., Russell Tritico, Janel Guillory, Carol

Green, Paul and Pat Rawlins, Charles Perkins, and Presley Dartez.
