Judy Diane Alexander, 69, of Ragley died Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Funeral service under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home.

Ignace James Deshotel

Ignace James Deshotel was born on Sept. 5, 1929, to parents Blanch Buller Deshotel and Arcade Deshotel at their home in Elton, LA.

After graduating from Elton High School, Mr. Deshotel served his country in the US Navy. When he returned from service, he married Syble Duplechian on April 30, 1950. They had one child, Madeline, and also raised Syble’s sister, Rita Gail.

Mr. Deshotel worked for 1 year with the City of Elton Water Department as Assistant Manager. He then worked for Chennault AFB for 12 years in Lake Charles. Later he became the Highway Maintenance Superintendent with the Louisiana Highway Department where he covered the parishes of Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jeff Davis for 22 years. He also worked as a Street Superintendent for the city of Lake Charles for 4 years.

IJ joined the American Legion, Post 1, in Lake Charles in 1951 and is still an active member. He has served as Post Commander and District and State Vice Commander. He was still serving on the Executive Board of Post 1.

IJ loved traveling with his wife Syble, who was National President of American Legion Auxiliary in 1995. They traveled to Europe, Asia, and all states in the US. They also loved to take cruises to various places in the Caribbean. They traveled to Las Vegas, Hawaii, San Francisco, and Branson, to name a few.

He attended St. Margaret and Our Lady Queen of Heaven.

Mr. Deshotel will be most remembered as a man of honor, dignity and respect.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Madeline Deshotel Nelson and husband Alfred of Kingwood, TX; adopted daughter, Rita Gail Duplechian Kirkpatrick of Lake Charles; two grandchildren, Michael Dale Nelson and wife Lindsey of Kingwood, TX and Rachel Sharon Nelson Gates and husband Paul of Aurora, CO; six grandchildren, Carsten, Case and Brody Nelson and Ruthie, Mariam and Esther Gates; one brother, Calvin Deshotel and wife Telia of Franklin and one sister, Loretta Lantz of Lake Charles.

He was preceded in death by his sweetheart, his wife of sixty-eight years, Syble Duplechian Deshotel, one sister, Alice Deshotel Sonnier and two brothers-in-law, Joseph Sonnier and Luther Lantz.

The family of Mr. Deshotel wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital and Heart of Hospice for their excellence in care and compassion.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Liberty Cemetery in Elton, LA. Visitation Wednesday will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service in the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary or any Veteran Organization Program.

Pauline Laviolette Dugas died Feb. 1. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Margaret Catholic Church under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home.

Gene David Fontenot, 58, died Sunday, Feb. 2, in a local nursing home. Cremation is under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home of Jennings.

Jeanette Gremillion

SULPHUR — Jeanette Gremillion, 90, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, in her residence.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Sulphur and was a member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. Jeanette was a strong supporter of St. Jude Children’s Hospital and also enjoyed sewing, and playing cards and dominos.

Survivors include her son, Dale Gremillion and wife Jana of Sulphur; siblings, Jerry Sonnier, Robert Sonnier, Annie Lou Bonsall and Edith Miller, all of Sulphur; stepchildren, JoAnn Winfree and husband Alvin of Westlake, Bobby Richard and wife Dale of Lake Charles, and Pat Richard and wife Rita of Hot Springs, Ark.; five grandchildren, Jared Gremillion and wife Carla, Trent Gremillion and partner Dustin Smith, Jordan Gremillion Hefner and husband Josh, Kayla Gremillion Lindsey and partner Garrett Grigsby, and Joey Gremillion and partner Dylan Warner; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her spouses, Floyd Gremillion and Loicy Richard; son, Carl Gremillion; infant son, Jared Gremillion; and siblings, Harry Sonnier, Joyce Comeaux, Adley Joseph “PeeWee” Sonnier, Clifford Sonnier, Mary Lou Breaux, Danny Sonnier, Frankie Sonnier, Celina Sonnier and Irving Sonnier.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward Richard, M.S. will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Sulphur under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday with a rosary service at 7 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Floyd Guillory

Floyd Guillory, 69, of Westlake, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020 at Harbor Hospice in Lake Charles. He was born in Mamou on Sept. 8, 1950. He was a graduate of Westlake Class of ‘68. He was proud of his service in the United States Navy. He retired after 32 years at PPG as a Welder. He loved fishing, outdoors, and loved working with his hands, whether he was helping others or building things around the house with his wife. Floyd loved crawfish boils and fishing with his sons any chance he got. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandsons, and loved them very much. He was a true family man.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Ruth Guillory; two sons, Carl Guillory and wife Sylvia of Fenton, Mackie Guillory and wife Jessica of Westlake; two grandchildren, Chance Guillory, and Gunner Guillory; his mother, Helen Guillory of Westlake; brother, Paul Guillory of Pearland; and his sister, Janice Guillot and husband Mike of Lake Charles.

Floyd is preceded in death by his father, Felton Guillory; and his best friend, Ferrell Perron.

Services will be held at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 at 4 p.m., with Rev. Mark Stanton officiating. (Fontenot) Guinn

IOWA – Vinenalla “Vi” M. (Fontenot) Guinn, a loving mother, grandmother, and friend, 85, passed away on Monday, Feb. 3, 2020 in a local care facility.

Vi worked at Western Heights Elementary in maintenance and in the cafeteria. She enjoyed cooking, shopping and spending time with her grandchildren. Her giving spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her children, Deborah “Debbie” Foreman (Mike); Homer E. “Buddy” Guinn, Jr.; Mary Farque (Olen) and Donald Guinn (Denise); 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Carol Jane Roberts.

She is preceded in death by her parents; spouse, Homer Guinn, Sr., and son, Richard Guinn, and 3 siblings.

Her cremation was entrusted to Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Per her wishes, there will be no service.

David Raymond Michna, 80, of Moss Bluff, died Saturday, Feb. 1, at home. Memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Johnson Funeral Home in Moss Bluff. Private burial of his urn will be at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains, N.J.

Curtis Dwayne Nunez, 61, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020 in a local Hospital.

He was born on May 26, 1958 to Betty and Curtis Nunez in Lake Charles, La. He was a graduate of Grand Lake High School, and lived most of his life in the Lake Charles area. His passion was duck hunting. He loved spending time hunting with his sons. They hunted on family property that was owned by his family since the Civil War. He retired from a lifelong welding career in 1985.

Those left to cherish his memory include his four sons, Curtis Dwayne Nunez, II of Alabama, Derek James Nunez of Grand Lake, LA, Dustin Edward Nunez (Kate) of Houston, TX, and Devin Ross Nunez (Angela) of Alaska; grandchildren, Cheyenne Ferdig, Hammond Brent-Nunez, Sullivan Brent-Nunez, Averi, Aubrie, Sierra, Noah, and Paisley Grooms; sister, Brenda Guillot of Thibodaux, LA; and his brother, Ellis Nunez (Debbie) of Grand Lake, LA.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 39 years, Tammie Gail Nunez; his parents; and his brother, Jody Nunez.

His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Marcus Wade will officiate. Burial will follow in Granger Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Ariel Breion Pete

Ariel Breion Pete, a life-long resident of Lake Charles entered this world on Jan. 14, 2000. Ariel accepted Christ at a very young age and was a member of United Christian Fellowship where she was in the youth choir, drama team, and children’s church ministry. She was a 2018 graduate of Alfred M. Barbe High school. Ariel, a junior at Mcneese State University majored in early childhood education. Ariel will be remembered as a kind, warm, young woman with strong faith who loved people.

Ariel was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandparents, Marion(Ruth) Fondel and Ivory (Leanna) Brooks Sr.; paternal great-grandparents, Bennie and Mary Ellen Moore; and paternal grandfather, Bennie Moore. Among the many loved ones cherishing sweet memories of Ariel are her parents; Alfred Pete and Britiny Brooks; sister, Ashlynn Jade Pete; half-siblings, Aanaya, Alajah, Gabriel, Avery and Alaya; maternal grandparents, Gregory J. Brooks Sr. and Linda Fondel; paternal grandmother, Kimberly Ann Pete; godparents David (Cheryl) Brignac, David Profit and Felisia Wesley-Profit; godson, Marion Brooks and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Funeral service for Ariel will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020, at United Christian Fellowship Church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in Combre Memorial Park the direction of Fondel Memorial Chapel.

Virgie Amesses Prewitt Smart, 79, of Leesville, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020.

Zelma Mary Spell

Zelma Mary Spell, age 81, of Westlake, La passed away on Sunday Feb. 2, 2020. Zelma was born May 13, 1938 to Olide Thibodeaux and Azalie Richard Thibodeaux.

Zelma was a lifelong resident of Westlake. She enjoyed listening and dancing to Cajun Music. She was a really good cook and took 2nd prize in the gumbo cook off at the duck race.

She was very active in volunteer work for Christus St. Patrick’s Hospital, Team Citgo and the Mardi Gras Krewe du le originales et les Enfants. Zelma was also involved with the Children’s Miracle Network, the Cancer walks, and the Calcasieu Council on Aging.

She is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers and four sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, of 64 years Clifton J. “C.J.” Spell; daughters, Anita McGraw (Doyle) of Garden City, Ks, Elizbeth Elliott (Floyd) of Branson, Mo, Regina Hardy (Ray) of Moss Bluff, La, Tammy Spell of Lake Charles, LA, Cornelia Crain (Carlton) of Westlake, LA; grandchildren, Nathan Colcher (Sheena) of Garden City, Ks, Adrienne Synos (Jeff) of Austin, TX, Drew Colcher of Austin, Texas, Jared Hoffpauir (Joanna) of Nixa, Mo, Evan Hoffpauir (Madison) Branson, Mo, Kayla Hardy Lake Charles, La, Dane Gillard of Lake Charles, La; sixteen great-grandchildren; brother, Joseph Thibodeaux of Lake Charles, La; Sister, Marie Bryson of Lake Charles, La.

Lerdie Taylor

Lerdie Taylor, 94, of Grand Lake passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, in the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings, Louisiana.

Lerdie Taylor was born on March 17, 1925 in Mermentau , Louisiana to Felix and Maria Pelly. She later moved to Jennings, Louisiana where she graduated from high school. She married Mervyn Taylor on May 24, 1946 and enjoyed seventy-one years of marriage with the love of her life, until his death in 2017. She lived most of her life in the Sweet Lake community. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Sherrill Ann LaVergne (Alan), one son, Terrel Lynn Taylor (Dale), and one daughter-in-law, Rhonda Prejean Taylor; six grandchildren, Michael LaVergne, Melissa LaVergne Poole (Scotty), Rusty Taylor, Sara Taylor Cazenave (Ross), Todd Taylor (Ashley) and Amber Taylor Donovan (Shawn); and seven great grandchildren, Stephen Poole, Emily Poole, Joshua Taylor, Hannah Taylor, Miles Cazenave , Nate Cazenave and Andrew Cazenave.

Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mervyn Taylor; one sister, Rosie LePrettre; one brother, Allen Pelly; and one son, Ricky Lee Taylor.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Scotty Poole will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Garden Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and will resume on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the start of the service.

Ronald Dale Taylor

Ronald Dale Taylor, 73, of Welsh completed his flight home on Monday, Feb. 3, 2020.

He was born on Oct. 18, 1946 to Robert and Helen Taylor in Jennings, LA. His family’s deep rooted love of agriculture paved the way to his life long career of flying. Growing up he spent many days with his grandfather on the family farm, leading to the sight of his first love-a cropduster. At the age of 14 he and his cousin, Biff fearlessly hopped aboard his grandfathers Luscombe Tail Dragger, flying it successfully about a mile away to his Aunt Bell’s house; a buzzing she would never forget.

He was a graduate of Welsh High School, Class of 1964, after graduation he obtained his Commercial Pilot License. Many of his days he spent in the air viewing the beautiful skylines and rice fields. He was a pioneer with many organizations, teaching safety to other pilots. He was a member of National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA), President of NAAREF, and a PAASS Presenter.

He was welcomed into heaven by his parents and his aunt Rena Belle Monceaux.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children; Kent Taylor, Laura (Zeb) Hawkins, Stuart (Jessica) Taylor, a sister Carol (David) Fraser, grandchildren; Reece, Audrey, Annaleigh, Ada, Kynlee, and Slade; a niece Julia Fraser Harris and a nephew Andrew Lee Fraser.

The family will welcome friends at First Baptist Church of Welsh on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020 beginning at 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Visitation will resume Wednesday at 8 a.m. until time of service. Funeral service will be Officiated by Rev. Ricky Treece, beginning at 10 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Cemetery.

The family extends many thanks to Golden Age of Welsh, Harbor Hospice and Heart of Hospice for their diligent care. Also a special thanks to his dear friends; Phil Stokes, Bill Sinke, and Bill Caraway.
