Irene D. Cole, 98, entered peacefully into rest on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, in DeRidder, La. Irene was born to Gus and Beulah (Gill) Dear on Oct. 31, 1921, in Oakdale, La.

Visitation will begin Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Labby Memorial Funeral Home in DeRidder, La. Funeral service will be Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, Visitation will begin 9 p.m. and service will begin 10 a.m. in Labby Memorial Funeral Home chapel in DeRidder, La., with the Rev. Roger Gill and the Rev. Frank Ott officiating. Interment will follow at Smyrna Cemetery, DeRidder, La.

Irene was from the Cole Central Community. She was a member of the Smyrna Baptist Church and their church secretary for 65 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Milford Cole and wife Peggy; sister, Nannie Sue McDonald; grandchildren, Shane Cole and wife Karen, Shanna Sellers and husband Bull, Shawn De Leon and husband Marco, Kathy Smith and husband Doc; ten great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband, Ivy Cole; parents, Gus and Beulah Dear; sons, Milton Cole, Malcolm Cole; several brothers and sisters.

Serving as pallbearers are Shane Cole, Hunter Cole, Bull Sellers, Pryce Fontenot, Jansen Fontenot and Doc Smith.

Monica Renee “Moonie/Mimsey” Coleman

Monica Renee “Moonie/Mimsey” Coleman, 49, was born Nov. 27, 1970, in Lake Charles, La., to the late Mildred Coleman. A lifelong resident of Lake Charles, she was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. She was also a graduate of Lagrange High School and employed by CARC. She departed this life Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, in a local hospital. She leaves to cherish her memories, one sister, Leshia Coleman Bellard; four brothers, Ronald Coleman, Kirk (Michelle) Coleman, Stanley Narcisse and Troy (Shronda) Narcisse; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Her funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. Pastor E.J. Kemper III will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. in the church.

Eula Pete Dugas, 104, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019.

Born in Ville Platte, La., she lived in Lake Charles for 95 years.

She was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church for 71 years. Before her failing health, she was President of Mission Board #1 for 19 years, a member of the Prayer Meeting Board, and sung in the Gospel Choir for more than 40 years. Until her death, she regularly attended Sunday church services and special programs and events.

In recognition of her 100th birthday, former President Barack Obama sent her a congratulatory letter and former Mayor Randy Roach proclaimed May 15, 2015 “Eula Dugas Day.”

Survivors include her beloved son, Lawrence Dugar; grandchildren, Patricia Dugar and Ashley Dugar; great-grandchildren, Robin (Ivan) Semien, Marlon (Crystal) Dugar, Amy Vallair, Madison Dartez, Macey Williams and Ashton Dugar; great-great-grandchildren, Caleb, Sasha and Kiersten Semien, Jayla, Jayden, Jaylen and Christian Dugar.

Funeral service will be Saturday, Jan. 4, Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 300 N. Blake Street, Lake Charles. Viewing will be 9:00 am; Expressions will be 10:30 am; Service will be 11:00 am. Pastor Elmore Garner, Officiating. Burial is under the direction of Combre Funeral Home.

Brandon Scott Funderburg, 22, of Westlake, was face to face with his Savior on Sunday, Dec. 29, in Lake Charles, La.

Brandon was born on Aug. 18, 1997, in Lake Charles, and was raised in Westlake where he graduated from Westlake High School. He was tremendously loved by his family and brought laughter into the lives of all who knew him. His love for people was evident by a forgiving and tender heart. Brandon was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother and stepfather, Deborah and David Lisemby of Ragley; his father, Troy Funderburg of Westlake; sisters, Katelyn Quinn (Korey) of Gillis, and Hannah Lisemby of Ragley; maternal grandparents, James and Sandra Hamilton of Orange, Texas; paternal grandmother, Lois Funderburg of Moss Bluff; nephew, Kallen Quinn and niece, Kyleigh Quinn both of Gillis; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Charles Funderburg Sr.; and a niece, Kendall Quinn.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jaceson Johnson and the Rev. Darry Lisemby will officiate. Burial will follow in Westlake Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and resume on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the start of the service.

Marjorie Erline Godwin

Marjorie Erline Godwin, 89, of Lake Charles, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019, in her home.

Mrs. Godwin was born on Aug. 13, 1930, in Many, La., to Albert Lamartine and Beulah White Riddick. She was a graduate of Vinton High School. She will be fondly remembered as a long-time member of University United Methodist Church in Lake Charles, where she was involved in ministry for many years. She belonged to the Stonerollers Sunday School Class, Tuesday Visiting Ladies, Children’s Sunday School, Craft Ladies, Junior High Youth Counseling and she faithfully helped with the annual church carnival.

Erline was very competitive. She enjoyed playing Spades, Dominos and Chicken Foot. She also enjoyed taking the kids crabbing, and she was an outstanding seamstress. But most of all she loved spending time with her grand children, who will always remember her for her “Tuna Can Biscuits.”

Survivors include her daughters, Diane Lockwood of Baton Rouge, and Molly Fiems of San Antonio; her son, Elliott Godwin (Lori) of Whitehouse, Texas; grandchildren, Christina and Garnett Brookshire, Brooke Godwin, William and Thomas Lockwood, and Jeff Curry; great-grandchildren, Peaches and Poppy Brookshire; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William E. Godwin Jr.; her parents; and her siblings, Evelyn Alamond, Lionel “Bud” Chargois, Anna “Dee Dee” Croft and Thomas “Boots” Riddick.

Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at University United Methodist Church of Lake Charles. The Rev. Steve Caraway will officiate assisted by the Rev. Katie Simpson and the Rev. Chris Blanchard. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. Visitation will be in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, and from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church.

Beverly A Higginbotham

Beverly A Higginbotham passed from this life on Dec. 31, 2019, in a local hospital surrounded by her loving family at the age of 67.

Beverly was born on Aug. 28, 1952, to Dalton and Goldie Trahan/Elias T. Breaux. She was preceded in death by her parents. Sister Loyce Trahan and brothers Oddley, E.J. and Rodney. She was the general manager for Zee Medical for over 39 Years. Beverly never met a stranger and will be sorely missed but there is great comfort knowing she has been reunited with the love of her life, our sweet daddy, Robert Wayne Higginbotham.

She leaves to mourn her memory, daughters Lorrie (Darren) Bertrand, Bobbie Simmons (Wade Hardy) Extra; son Michael Champion (started as a son in law and became a son), her well loved grandchildren, Darby and Shelby Bertrand and Devon Champion; sisters, Leah Ledkins, Linda Thibodeaux (Carrol), Orlene Lopez (Perry) and Charlene LaBouve (Jimmy); brothers, Floyd Trahan (Darlene) and Snooky Trahan (Mary); half brothers, Ernest and J.C. Breaux; and half sisters, Irene LeDoux, Mary Lou Harrell and Lou Ethel East.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, from 9 a.m. until time of service in the chapel of Lakeside Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 4, 2020, in the chapel of Lakeside Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Consolata Cemetery.

Lorrie and Bobbie would like to express their gratitude to all of Mr. and Mrs. Higginbotham’s siblings and their cousins for being there for them during this difficult time. You are what family is about.

Theresa Ann Whitehead Lee

On Jan. 1, 2020, the angel of silence came to Theresa Ann Whitehead Lee and ushered her into a period of rest. The service in celebration of her life will be held in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at 3 p.m. The family invites friends to visitation which begins at 2.

Theresa was born April 4, 1946, in Lafayette, La., to the late Rev. Preston and Sarah Whitehead. Theresa’s passion was education and she believed in the power education provided. She attended Francis Marion Boley High School and then pursued her Bachelor’s degree at Grambling State University. After graduation, she was recruited by Racine, Wisconsin School District as a part of the integration movement, where she was the 1st African American teacher at Case High School. In 1971 she was hired by Calcasieu Parish School district and became the Librarian at LaGrange High School for one year. In 1972 she was hired as, an ENGLISH II and III teacher at Sulphur High School. She received her Master’s in English in 1976 from McNeese State University. She taught at Sulphur High School for 33 years until her retirement in 2003 with a total of 35.5 years of teaching. After retirement she enjoyed gardening, painting, traveling, and watching her granddaughters, Kiara and Monique, play the game she truly loves, which was basketball.

On June 21, 1969, she was united in marriage to Richard H. Lee Jr. for 41 years until his untimely death in 2010. From their union a daughter, Dawn Nicole, was born.

Theresa loved to work with children and youth groups. She became a member of Willow Springs Baptist in Sulphur, La. In 1972 where she organized Vacation Bible School, produced many plays, worked as a Sunday School teacher, and a youth director. In 1995 she moved her membership to Mt Calvary Baptist Church, in Lake Charles, La., where she worked as the Women’s’ Conference Chair for 7 years. In 2011 she became the Co-Chair of the Family Conference. She also was a huge pillar to her community. In 1975 Theresa became a member of the Mossville Social and Civic Club where she held the office of treasure until her untimely death.

Theresa leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Dawn Lee-Holman (Bobby); son, Michael Trusclair; seven grandchildren, Kiara and Monique Patterson, Michael and Matthew Trusclair, and Amar, Princess and Riley Holman; five sisters, Alzina Fontenot (Bernard), Gwendolyn Whitehead, Dorothy Brown (Norwood), Dianne Broussard and Sandra Whitehead; one brother, the Rev. Henry Whitehead; three godchildren, Demetra Thodile, Shannon Williams and John Rideau; special nephew, Herman Lewis Jr.; special cousin, Kim Kay McKee; and best friend Vera Payne; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Lee Jr.; her parents, the Rev. Preston and Sarah Whitehead; two sisters, Patricia Simon and Sylvia Whitehead; one brother, Paul Whitehead; one sister-in-law, Sandra Mason; four brothers-in-law, Leo Malvo, Burnell Broussard Sr., Percy Trahan and Gregory Lee Sr.

Horace Joseph Leger, 92, of Lake Charles, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, in a local care facility. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Graveside service will be at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Cemetery, Mire, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.

Gloria Eloise Sliman Meek

Gloria Eloise Sliman Meek was born in Oakdale, La., on Oct. 15, 1927, to Julia Emile Farris and George John Sliman and she went to be with her Lord Dec. 31, 2019, at the age of 92. She graduated from Oakdale High School in 1944, and then attended McNeese Junior College where she thoroughly enjoyed her music classes. Gloria was especially proud to be able to participate in the Messiah Choir, and she also enjoyed singing in the choir at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. Gloria worked as a bookkeeper for Calcasieu Marine National Bank and Gulf States Utilities prior to marrying John Wesley Meek. As a member of St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church for many years, she served on the Alter Guild. Later she enjoyed attending Church and Sunday School at St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church. She was a resident of Lake Charles for over 70 years.

Gloria loved to travel, and her most memorable trip was to California in 1946 with her two brothers James and Emile Sliman. She also had many fun adventures to Colorado with her family where she enjoyed camping, horseback riding and white-water rafting. Gloria loved to cook her Lebanese dishes for her family and as an early widow she devoted her life to raising her three daughters and encouraged them to pursue a college education. She stressed the importance of being kind to others by having a servant’s heart. She enjoyed listening to Big Band Music and attending the local theatre. Later in life, she became a Star Wars Fan and looked forward to watching the new episodes with her family. As an avid reader, she kept up to date on current events. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed sewing baby blankets for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gloria was preceded in death by her infant son, John Wesley Meek Jr.; her husband, John Wesley Meek Sr.; her parents, Julia and George John Sliman; and her brothers, James and Bill Sliman. She is survived by her three daughters, Janelle Williams and her husband Dr. Mark Williams of Lake Charles, La., Arlene Breaux and her husband Kevin of Woodworth, La., and Sharon Taylor of Marietta, Ga.; her siblings, Emile Sliman and his wife Joan of Mobile, Ala., Ernest Sliman and his wife Jeanne of Mobile, Ala., and Linda Surdyke and her husband Gary of Festus, Mo. She has seven grandchildren, Katherine Swire and her husband the Rev. Bradley Swire of Lake Arthur, La., Thomas and Michael Williams of Lake Charles, La., Dr. Jared Breaux and his wife Dr. Monica Breaux of Torrance, Calif., Amanda Breaux of New Orleans, La., Colt Friday and his wife Courtney of Bossier City, La., and Tanya Gilley of Bossier City, La. She also has six great-grandchildren, Allison and Karra Swire, Brianna Eaton, Abigail Friday, Cheyenne Gilley and Julian Breaux; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Ron Lewis and all the staff at Brookdale, especially Melena and Charlene, for all the excellent care given to our Mother. Heartfelt thanks go out to Heart of Hospice for providing compassionate care to our Mother. Her joyous spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at 10 a.m. followed by the service at 11 a.m. at St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Prien Memorial Park Cemetery (2200 Country Club Road) under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles, La. Dr. John Robert Black will officiate services.

Phyllis Savoie Pinch

JENNINGS – Funeral services for Mrs. Phyllis Savoie Pinch, 68, of Roanoke, formerly of Creole, will be held on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020 at 1 p.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles McMillin officiating. Burial will follow in Lopez Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.

Visitation for Mrs. Pinch will begin on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020 at 3 p.m. and close at 9 p.m., with a rosary at 6 p.m. It will resume on Friday at 8 a.m. and continue until 12:30.

Phyllis was born in Creole, La. on August 9, 1951 to James R. “Sono” and Hazel Richard Savoie. She passed away on Monday, Dec. 29, 2019 after a brief illness surrounded by her loved ones. Phyllis attended South Cameron High School where she was very active in basketball, softball, and track. In fact, Phyllis held the state record in shotput and discus until her record was broken in the 90’s. She was Homecoming Queen her senior year and was selected as a class favorite. After her high school graduation Phyllis attended McNeese State University where she received a Bachelor degree in Secondary Education in 1974. She taught for several years before leaving when Jami and Aaron were young. She resumed teaching at Cameron Elementary School but later moved back to South Cameron High School until her retirement in 2006. Phyllis was a strict disciplinarian and an excellent teacher. She loved teaching and she loved her students. Many of her former students will tell you she made a tremendous impact on their lives and they still love her today.

Phyllis and her late husband Pat were active in the International and Texas Brangus Associations traveling to cattle shows all over the United States. Neither Pat nor Phyllis ever met a stranger and so their friends numbered many from all across the country.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jami Leigh Pinch; son, Aaron Paul Pinch and his wife Ashley; a sister, Anne S. Roberts and her husband Robin; two brothers, Michael Savoie and his wife Claudia and Robert “Bob” Savoie and his wife Sue; four grandchildren, Harper, Dax and Maggie Pinch and Reid Russel; numerous nieces and nephews, and many close friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick “Pat” W. Pinch; her parents, Sheriff James R. “Sono” and Hazel Richard Savoie; and her niece, Sarah Henry and her great-nephew, John Thomas Savoie.

Carrying Phyllis to her place of rest will be Jacob Wilkerson, Corey Kelley, Devon Theriot, Pat Scott, Raymond Hicks, Myron Saathoff, Paul Watson and Martin Trahan.

Loritha Poullard

Loritha Poullard, 77, departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019, at her residence in Lake Charles, La. She was born Sept. 13, 1942, to Felicien Lavergne and Edna Semien Lavergne in Eunice, La. She was a devoted housewife and faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholich Church.

She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 52 years, Raymond Poullard; two sisters, Theresa Simien and Rosella Guillory; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Felicien and Edna Lavergne; one daughter, Amanda Poullard; three sisters, Edna Biagas, Lorena Batiste and Rosemary Shillow; and one brother, Roger Lavergne.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at 9 a.m. at King’s Funeral Home and funeral service at noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Father Charles Okorougo officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of King’s Funeral Home.

George Milton Shirley Jr.

George Milton Shirley Jr., of Tomball, Texas, died Dec. 27, 2019, of heart disease.

He was born in Beaumont, Texas; Sept. 23, 1939, to George Milton Shirley Sr and Ava Pearl Beatrice (Patty) Shirley. George graduated from Orangefield High School as valedictorian in 1957 and received a B.S. in Sociology from Lamar University in 1976. He was married to Anne Himmelheber Dec. 26, 1960.

George earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1956. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1960. He was in the Naval reserves and later the Texas State Guard. While in Orange, Texas, one of his hobbies was working as a gunsmith in his father’s gun shop, Guns ‘N’ Gadgets. He also wrote articles about his Salt Water fishing trips in the Red Sea while working for and articles for Safety magazines. He had 50 years in the Petrochemical Industry in Texas, Louisiana, and Saudi Arabia. He worked as a safety consultant in Sulphur LA from 1991 until 2011.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anne; daughter, Merrie Thomas (Frank) of Tomball, Texas; son, Ransome Shirley (Mitzi) of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Joshua Robertson (Stephanie) of The Woodlands, Texas, Benjamin Robertson (Chelsea) of Tomball, Texas, Megan Young (Bryan) of Spring, Texas, Jordan Shirley of Houston, Texas, Nicholas Shirley of Corpus Christi; and six great-grandchildren.

Following his cremation and a family memorial service, George will be transported by a Navy vessel and his cremains buried at sea.
