LAKE CHARLES — Jonathan W. “T-Pot” Alex, 49, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, in a local hospital.

Jonathan was born on Oct. 9, 1969, to the late Isabelle Handy-Alex and William Joshua Alex Sr. He was a 1987 graduate of Lake Charles-Boston High School and attended McNeese State University. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and employed as a Lab Analyst with Firestone and Koch Industries. He was married to Trimone Fondel-Alex and to that union, two children were born, Johnny and Tariah Jonaé Alex. Jonathan loved to fish, cook and read books. He was a member of M. W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge F & A.M. No. 103.

Jonathan is survived by his wife, Trimone Fondel-Alex, LA; his daughter, Tariah Jonae’ Alex; brothers, Ricky Alex, Victor (Tammy) Alex, and Wiliam Jr. (Lilly) Alex; sisters, Gwen (Ronnie) Ringo and Ruth Patterson and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Johnny Alex; parents, Isabelle Handy-Alex and William Joshua Alex; sister, Dorethia Callahan.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in New Providence Baptist Church, 307 Deshotel Lane, Lake Charles, La. The Rev. Freddie Brown will officiate. Visiting will be in the church from 9 a.m. until the time of funeral. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of Semien-Lewis Mortuary. Bishop Raymond Antoine Young will officiate. Burial will be in Combre Memorial Park. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. in the church. Mr. Antoine departed this life Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, in a local hospital.

Janice Carol Albritton Brashier, devoted mother, and adoring wife passed away peacefully at her home in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, Sept. 25. She is survived by her husband and high school sweetheart, Douglas Roy Brashier; and sons, Craig, Crisman and Kevin McClain; along with 7 grandchildren. Also, she leaves 2 loving step-daughters and their families.

Janice was born on March 22, 1939, in Olive Branch in East Feliciana Parish to Ruth Stott and Wilton Rivers Albritton. She held fond memories of learning to drive the old Willys Jeep around their family farm. After high school, she went on to LSU where she was a Phi Mu sorority member and voted a class “Sweetheart.”

While there she met the father of her children, the late R. Scott McClain. After moving their young family to Lake Charles, Janice became active in social organizations such as the Krewe of Mystic and Junior League while being a mother of 3 active boys.

Her real love was design, style, and fashion. First with antiques and home decoration and then apparel. The interest lead to owning Hudson Bay Clothing with her sons. She loved going to the apparel markets and working on store displays and she loved meeting and talking to people. It is easy to say that everyone that met Janice loved her.

We will miss you dearly Janice. May you rest in peace.

The family wishes to thank The Hospice of Baton Rouge, The Butterfly Wing and First United Methodist of Baton Rouge where she was a long-time member.

Services to be held Saturday, Oct. 5, at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, with visitation from 10-noon, service at noon with a reception immediately after.

Barbara Duhon Comeaux

Barbara Duhon Comeaux, 81, of Lake Charles, La., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, in a local care facility after a long bout with Alzheimer’s. She graduated from Lake Charles High School and retired from the Calcasieu Parish School Board where she worked in numerous cafeterias.

Mrs. Comeaux is survived by her husband, Anson Comeaux; daughter, Lisa Comeaux Sittig and husband Ralph John Sittig Jr; daughter-in-law, Laurie Fitzgerald Comeaux; grandson, Steven Comeaux and wife Jade; and two great-grandchildren, Carson and Callie Comeaux.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph “Roy” and Ella Mae Duhon; brother, Joseph “Roy” Duhon Jr.; and son, James Anson Comeaux Jr.

Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Deacon Anthony Pousson will officiate. Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 4, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and will continue on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.

Leon Enore Ellis, 95, departed this life on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Harbor Hospice in Lake Charles, La. He was a twin, born Sept. 13, 1924, to Claiborne and Lillie Ellis in Lake Charles, La. He was a World War II veteran at Pearl Harbor in the U.S. Navy with an honorable discharge. Visitation will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at 9 a.m. and funeral service at 11 a.m. at King’s Funeral Home, Pastor Joshua Mitchell, officiating. Burial will follow in Ellis Cemetery under the direction of King’s Funeral Home.

Penny Evans Fontenot, 52, of Lake Charles, died Thursday, Oct. 3, in a Lafayette hospital. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, in Johnson Funeral Home. Interment will be in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation Sunday will be from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Visitation Monday will be 8 a.m. until the time of service in the funeral home.

Glinda Regina Grant, 77, of Merryville, died Wednesday, Oct. 2. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder. Burial will be at Meadows Cemetery in Merryville.

Dale Peter Hotard

JENNINGS — Dale Peter Hotard, 87, passed away peacefully at Jennings American Legion Hospital at 11 a.m. on Oct. 2, 2019. Dale was born in Garyville, La., on Aug. 8, 1932. His family moved to Jennings when he was 2 years old. He graduated from Jennings High School in 1950 and entered Louisiana State University that same year.

Dale put his college career on hold to join the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and served in the 19th Air Division from 1952-1956. Following his military service, he returned to LSU and graduated with a degree in education in 1958. While at LSU, he met Sandra Ann Passantino of Thibodaux, La. They were married on June 6, 1959. They resided in Jennings for the next sixty years where they raised their family.

Dale began his teaching career at Jennings High School and later at Midland High School. He went on to earn his master’s degree from McNeese State University and served as Assistant Principal at Jennings High and then Principal at Northside Junior High.

Dale left education for a few years in the 1970s and 1980s, first becoming General Manager of Foley Drilling Tools, and later founding K&H Cypress Outdoor Furniture. In the 1990s, he returned to education and taught history at Notre Dame High School in Acadia Parish until his retirement.

Driven by his love of baseball, he spent many of his summers coaching area youth baseball teams. Most notably, he was coach for the Jennings American Legion baseball team from 1965-1974, culminating in this area’s first regional tournament appearance in Ruston in 1974, a feat not replicated until 2006.

A man of deep Catholic faith, Dale was a long time parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Jennings, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Serra Club, and the OLHC Social Committee.

Mr. Hotard was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Leonce Hotard II and Marie Montz Hotard; his son, David Kieran Hotard; his sisters, Mrs. Leo Devall (Dorothy “D.D”), Mildred Hotard, Mrs. Benny Buller (Noelie), Mrs. Lawrence Foley (Leona); and his brother, Joseph Leonce “Buddy” Hotard III.

Dale is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sandra Ann Passantino Hotard; his sons, Dale Peter Hotard II (Wendy Hundley) of St. Louis, Mo., Thomas J. Hotard (Jitlada Klongdee) of Welsh, La., Patrick M. Hotard (Donna Taylor) of Irving, Texas, Stephen C. Hotard (Wendy Hornsby) of Welsh, La.; his grandchildren, Pete, Emma, Catherine, David, Elisabeth, Nathan, Meredith, and Arya; and his great-granddaughter, Colette.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church with Father Charles McMillin officiating. Graveside service will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be at Matthews & Son Funeral Home, Jennings, on Friday, Oct. 4, 2019, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a rosary recited at 6 p.m.

Moonlee Mowad Karam

OAKDALE — Moonlee Mowad Karam was born in Oakdale, La., on Oct. 25, 1927, to Mary and Joe S. Mowad, and she died on Oct. 1, 2019, at the age of 91. She graduated from Oakdale High School in 1944 as salutatorian along with her cousin Freeman Mowad, who was valedictorian. She graduated from LSU in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in the College of Commerce and from LSU in 1949 from the College of Education. She married George Karam in 1950. She served as president of several organizations, including the Oakdale High School Parents Club, the Oakdale High Band Mothers Club, the Les Mille Fleur Garden Club, and she was vice-president of the LSU Sigma Chi Mothers Club. At Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oakdale, she was Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters and was an organist. She was on the Eunice Deanery of Catholic Woman, the Lafayette Diocese Ecumenical Board, and the Board of Louisiana Interfaith of Churches. She served on the Steering Committee of the LSU Parents Club. For 15 years, she was on the Advisory Board of LSU Alexandria.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, George Karam; her parents, Mary and Joe S. Mowad; her brother, Anthony Mowad and his wife Mary Ann; her brother, Dr. George Mowad; and her sister, Rosalie Mowad Karam and her husband Bernard Karam.

She has five children, Dr. George Karam and his wife Mary of Baton Rouge, Jeannette Karam Rolfsen and her husband Dr. Mike Rolfsen of Baton Rouge, Dr. Tommy Karam and his wife Jamie of Baton Rouge, David Karam of Oakdale, and Chris Karam and his wife Michelle of Alexandria, La. She has 15 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be said at 10 a.m. followed by visitation from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1208 East 7th Avenue) in Oakdale, La., on Saturday, Oct. 5. Visitation will be followed by a 12:30 p.m. Mass of resurrection. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Home of Oakdale.

Pallbearers are Mitchel Karam, Thomas Karam, Albert Mowad and Michael, Matthew, and Mark Rolfsen. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Joe Deumite, Dr. Mike Rolfsen, and Dr. Mike Karam.

Her children would like to thank God for Mom.

Roger Templeton

Reverend Roger Hugh Templeton, 53, died on Oct. 1, 2019, of suicide. We ask that you open your heart and offer compassion without judgment for those that suffer from illness rooted in stigma, trauma or shame. This was how Roger practiced ministry. Sadly, he succumbed to severe depression, leaving behind heartbroken family, friends and colleagues.

Roger was born on Aug. 28, 1966, in Opelousas, La. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman; beloved mother, Elaine; and brother-in-law, Daniel. He is survived by his wife, Pam; daughter, Bethany (Cameron); stepson, Atticus; daughter, Penelope; brother, Herman Jr. (Laura); brother, John; sister, Lillie; and many very loved family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at Gretna United Methodist Church on Whitney Avenue at 1 p.m. Visitation will be from 11:30 to 1 p.m.

Donations may be made in Roger’s name to either Gretna United Methodist Church or the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

Jeff “Big Jeff” Thomas Jr.

Jeff “Big Jeff” Thomas Jr., 65, was born Feb. 1, 1954, in New Orleans, La., to the late Jeff and Georgia Picou Thomas Sr. He graduated from J.S. Clark High School in New Orleans and was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Jeff worked as a Maritime Longshoreman in Local 2047. He loved the New Orleans Saints and the Pittsburg Steelers and lived life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by his entire family and friends. He departed this life Monday, Sept. 23, 2019, in Lake Charles.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Pauline Thomas; three daughters, Shayla Lynette Thomas (Deondre) Citizen, Toni Karen (Joseph Brandon ) Simien Sr., and Priscilla Roxanne Rubin; six sons, Terrell Dwayne (Stephanie) Rubin, Jeff Thomas III, Jay Tee (Lanoy) Thomas, Jason Demon Thomas, Matt Earl Thomas (Courtney) Rubin, and Javon “Baby Jeff” Rubin; four sisters, Patricia Thomas Hartman, Dana Thomas Goodwin, Monique Brown, and Trinette Thomas; one brother, Richard Maryland; 27 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Timmy Lee Thomas and Steven Ray Thomas; one sister, Mary Susan Guillory; and one brother-in-law, Earl Hartman Jr.

His memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 600 Simmons St., in Lake Charles. Pastor Barry Thomas will officiate.

Ethel White Woods, 96, departed this life on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019.

A native of Plaisance, La., she was a longtime resident of Lake Charles. Mother Woods was a faithful and dedicated member of Unity Baptist Church. She served faithfully as Mother of the Church, Deaconess Ministry, Kitchen Ministry, Mission Ministry, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Worker.

Mother Woods leaves to cherish and carry on her legacy two daughters, Rose (Alfred Jr.) Young and Cheryl A. Woods of Lake Charles, La.; daughter-in-law, Pamela V. Woods; grandchildren, Deidra Y. Young, Delisa (Gregory) Clark, Derick (Chelsea) Woods Sr., Deitrick S. Young, Daphne (Paul) Guillory, Deneika E. Woods and Donovan C. Woods; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wiona Thomas and Levonia (Joseph) Thomas of Plaisance, La.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, New Covenant Faith Baptist Church. Pastor, the Rev. Jimmy R. Stevens. Dr. A.B. Lartigue officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of Stevens’ Funeral Home. Visitation Saturday 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the church.
