With all the hoopla over the flash-in-the-pan Popeyes chicken sandwich which I never got a chance to try before it disappeared, I’m sure others like me now have fast food chicken on the brain.
Having heard good things about how awesome the KFC chicken pot pie is from multiple sources, I wanted to try one — especially since a sheet of KFC coupons made their way into our house. Those coupons were a good excuse to try the pot pie and check out the newest KFC location at 2412 Ryan St.
My coworker Pamela Seal is a huge fan of the KFC pot pie.
“I’ll go to KFC just for that. Then if they tell me they’ve run out of them, I’m so disappointed. I usually just drive off. I don’t want anything else. I’m wanting one right now just talking about it,” she said last week.
The good news is that the KFC pot pie is as good as Pamela and others have said it is. There are sizable chunks of chicken, diced potatoes and carrots with peas all covered in a thick, creamy sauce.
The pie’s crust, which to me
is the best part, is crisp and flaky and golden, and it spills out over the top of the aluminum pan that holds the pie. This pot pie is the ultimate in fast food comfort food.
So that’s the good news. The bad news is that the 790-calorie pie has 1,970 milligrams of sodium, making it not the healthiest choice to consume every day. To me, though, it was worth every excess milligram of sodium that passed my lips. I ate half of it Friday night when I bought it, and saved half for the next day so I wouldn’t be taking in all that sodium in one fell swoop. The thing is, when you get a whiff of this delicious pot pie and see that flaky crust, watching your sodium intake doesn’t seem all that important. I have no regrets for indulging in this little bit of pot pie heaven.
My husband Neil tried two KFC Chicken Little sandwiches while I sampled the pie.
While it may seem odd to describe a sandwich as cute, there is a no more fitting word to describe this small, fried-chicken-tender mini-sandwich on a sesame seed bun. One Chicken Little sandwich fits neatly in the palm of your hand. It comes with mayo and pickles. Neil, always one to want to improve on a thing, added a slice of cheddar cheese to it when we got home. It was quite good, he said.
For comfort food and cuteness in one fast food location, the KFC pot pie and Chicken Little sandwich can’t be beat.
