Sheriff: 2 dead in small plane crash
OPELOUSAS — A Louisiana sheriff’s office confirms that two people have been killed in a small plane crash on the levee of the Atchafalaya River.
St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz tells news outlets the crash happened Wednesday.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says only the pilot and a passenger were in the aircraft at the time of the crash.
Lunsford says the single-engine Quicksilver Ultralight crashed around 12:15 p.m. under unknown circumstances. He says his agency will release the plane’s tail number after investigators verify it.
The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified.
Shreveport to end ‘Saggy pants’ law
SHREVEPORT — The city of Shreveport has moved to abolish a 2007 ordinance banning people from wearing pants below their waistline.
The Shreveport Times reports the City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday to abolish the law. Police data show it resulted in the arrests of a total of 699 black men and 12 white men.
The law has been questioned since 31-year-old Anthony Childs died in February after an officer tried to stop him for sagging pants. Police say Officer Traveion Brooks chased and shot Childs three times. A coroner’s report says Childs was ultimately killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The ordinance said arrests and searches couldn’t solely be based on violating the ordinance. Police Chief Ben Raymond says it’s unclear if anybody was arrested for the violation alone.
81-year-old bicyclist dies of crash injuries
LULING — Louisiana State Police say an 81-year-old bicyclist has died of injuries from a crash on May 31.
Trooper Monroe Dillon III said in a news release Tuesday that the agency was notified Thursday that John Collins of Luling had died.
He says Collins was not wearing a helmet and rode out of a parking lot into the path of a car on U.S. Highway 90 in Luling. The collision knocked him from the bicycle.
Dillon said in an email that the driver has not been cited.
Deputies: Alligator bit off piece of car
MOORINGSPORT — Sheriff’s deputies in Louisiana say an alligator took a bite out of one of their patrol cars.
WBRZ-TV reports deputies were called Monday to Louisiana Highway 1 in Caddo Parish after someone spotted the gator in the middle of the road.
The sheriff’s office says deputies were waiting for wildlife removal experts to arrive when the alligator chomped off a piece of the front bumper. Deputies estimate the alligator was 8 feet (2.4 meters) long.
A photo from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office Facebook page shows the reptile in grass next to what appears to be the black rectangular grill of the car.
Authorities say the gator escaped before the wildlife removal experts arrived.
