Elzia Mae “Zickie” Daigle Ardoin, 89, of Lake Charles, died Tuesday, March 5, in a local hospital. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. today, March 8, at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Lacassine Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.

”Sonny” Benoit

Joseph Dell “Sonny” Benoit, 88, a resident of Sulphur, La., passed form this life onto his eternal reward on March 2, 2019, in the comfort of his home.

“Sonny” as he was known by all was a loving husband, dad, and Paw Paw. He served with honor in the U.S. Navy. Sonny was an avid fisherman, loved gardening and most importantly knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Sonny is preceded in death by his parents, Odell and Theresa Bellomo Benoit; wife, Ethel Cooke Benoit; daughter-in-law, Melinda Benoit, and two sisters, Ella Mae Labby and Ann Dore.

He leaves to mourn his loss and carry on his legacy his two children, Kenneth W. Benoit of Houston and Debbie Benoit of Sulphur; sisters, Micki Prather and husband James Lee, Josie Benoit, and Linda Ritter; three grandchildren: Jennifer, Kevin and wife Krystal, and Keith, and wife Latisha and seven great grandchildren: Zachary, Kayla, Nathan, Karter, Calleigh, Allison, and Melinda.

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, March 9, 2019, in the sanctuary of Freedom Life Church 314 Broad Street, Lake Charles, La., from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. at Freedom Life Church. Pastor Paula Raley is to officiate. Burial will follow at Benoit Cemetery with Military Honors.

Stacy Baker Brooks, 52, of Vinton, passed away March 2, at her sister’s home. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Welsh Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton.

Steve James Broussard

Steve James Broussard, 83, died on March 4, 2019, at home in Welsh, La. Steve was the son of Lily Hardy Broussard and Septime Broussard, both of Breaux Bridge, La. Growing up in Breaux Bridge, he graduated from Breaux Bridge High School where he played football and baseball until an eye injury sidelined him. He attended ULL in Lafayette and School of Banking in Norman, Okla. Steve spent 50 years in the banking service at 1st National in Lafayette, American Bank in Lake Charles, Calcasieu Marine, in Lake Charles, Crowley State Bank and Farmers State Bank in Church Point,

Mr. Broussard was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Lisa Meloncon; and sisters, Viva Periou and Velma Guidry.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Ann Broussard; his daughter, Stephanie Landry (David); four stepchildren, Steve Monks (Debbie), Lisa Monks, Tommy Monks, Billy Monks (Robert); and grandsons, Michael Hebert (Megan), Jonathon Melancon (Kyndra), Courtland Monks, Luke and Dan Billeaudeaux, Mehgan Young (Daniel) and nine great-grandchildren.

Trail riding, selling horses and mules, gossiping and having coffee with the guys at Cajun Tales was a special pass time. Steve served in the Army National Guard in the Special Forces having gone to jungle survival school in Panama and jump school at Ft. Benning, Ga., as well as other areas.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church of Welsh, La. A gathering of friends and family will be at 9 a.m. Burial will take place at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in Breaux Bridge, La., at a later date.

Funeral for Donnell “Tommy ” Colquitt Jr., 62, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Messiah Baptist Church, Pastor Robert L. Owens. Evangelist Al King will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Tommy departed this life Feb. 23, 2019 in Lake Charles.

Julia Gradney DuRousseau

Julia Gradney DuRousseau was born on June 3, 1934, to Avie and Alice Gradney. Julia was united in marriage to John DuRousseau on January 3, 1953. Through this union they were blessed with 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls; Merlin DuRousseau, Raymond DuRousseau, Margaret (DuRousseau) husband, Joseph Richard, Maria (Durousseau) Mott, Nancy DuRousseau.

She was a wonderful loving mother to her children and grandchildren. She was a compassionate, strong, gentle, caring and giving person. She touched the hearts of many throughout her life. Whoever met her could not help but love her from the first time they met her. She will truly be missed by her family and friends.

Her memories are left to be cherished by; children, six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Blaze Mable Abbott, Mildred Addie; brother, Audley Gradney; daughter in-law Dianna DuRousseau.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. DuRousseau; son, Merlin DuRousseau; parents, Avie and Alice Gradney; brothers, Jack Gradney, Austin Gradney; sisters, Lula Gradney and Florence Rougeau.

The DuRousseau family would like to give special thanks to Heart of Hospice staff and counselor, Laura; nurses, Erin, Brittany and Sam; Chaplin’s, Theron and Rob. Also to Julia’s personal caregiver Maxine Harris and prayer warrior, Loretta Lejeune from St. Theodore’s Catholic Church.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019, from 8 a.m. at Hixson of Moss Bluff until leaving to St. Theodores Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian burial. Mass will begin at noon with Monsignor DuBois officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Micca Fox Lachapelle, “Bear,” eight months, departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, at his home in Jennings, La. He was born June 4, 2018, to Roland Lachapelle and Natasha Synigal in Lake Charles, La.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his parents, Roland Lachapelle and Natasha Synigal; two brothers, Zyan Serialle and Abraham Lachapelle both of Jennings, La.; his grandparents, Nathalie Guillory, Glenn Synigal, Roland and Dianna Lachapelle.

Dennis Bryan Naff

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Dennis Bryan Naff announces his passing on Feb. 25, 2019, at St. Lukes Hospital in Houston. He was born in 1950 in Lake Charles. He was a loving and generous brother, uncle and great-uncle. We will miss him.

He was a 1968 graduate of Westlake High School, a 1972 graduate of LSU and he received a masters degree in chemistry from the University of Houston.

He worked for many years as a Chemical Engineer before turning to teaching chemistry and physics. He loved teaching, and he also enjoyed listening to music, reading and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Berry and Helen Naff, and a special aunt and uncle, Myrtle and Dean Fuller.

He leaves to cherish his memory his sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Wayne Fleming; nieces, Laci Hood and Lauri Fleming; greats, Chris Hood, Jonathan Hood, Taylor Hood and Anna Hood; three great-greats, Charlee, Landry and Collins Hood; special cousin, Delores Simmons; and many other cousins and friends. He also leaves a loyal friend, Dennis Keim.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2019, at Bellview Baptist Church in Westlake. Oliver McGuire will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Westlake.

Ray Fred Porché

Ray Fred Porché passed away from a heart attack on Nov. 15, 2018, while working in Hobbs, N.M., for Maximum Elite Sales Co.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patty Perry Porché; one daughter, Amanda Porché Sanders and husband Joe Sanders; one son, Shane Ross Porché; three grandsons, Noah, Owen and Maclin Sanders; one sister, Janelle Porché Landry (David); four brothers, Glenn Porché (Suzanne), Joe Porché, Gene Porché (Debra) and Mike Porché (Brenda); one sister-in-law, Joyce Perry LeJeune (Mike); one brother-in-law, Mike Perry (Janie).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Bernice (Chaumont) Porché; one brother, Paul Porché (Margaret); his godson, Chris Porché; and brother-in-law, Steve Perry.

Ray never met a stranger, he was a kind and loving husband, father and brother. He enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends with his great sense of humor and quick wit. He was an avid outdoorsman. He was in the tire business for many years.

Ray was born in Basile, La., on Aug. 28, 1953. He later moved to the Lake Charles and Sulphur area.

There will be a gathering of family and friends Saturday, March 9, at St. Theresa’s KC Hall in Carlyss, La., from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. KC Hall is located at 4822 Carlyss Drive.

Ray was an organ donor. His body was donated to science.

Karla Gweyn Reed, 60, transitioned on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, Texas.

Karla Gweyn Reed, daughter of Ester Gims and the late Stanley Gims, was born Jan. 27, 1959, in Lake Charles, La. She attended 1st Ward Elementary, Lincoln Jr. High School, graduated in 1977 from Washington High School and from Delta Technical College in Business Administration. At an early age she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined Christian Baptist Church where she was a dedicated member. Mrs. Reed was a retired secretary from Brentwood Elementary and as a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality, she was loved by many. She resided in Baytown, Texas, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 38 years, Alvin Ray (Buck) Reed.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her son, Damon Allen Gims (Shequelle Foster-Gims) of Missouri City, Texas; daughter, Alicia Patrese Reed of Lake Charles, La.; sisters, Jocelyn Griffin, Glenda Gims, both of Lake Charles, La., Gerald Gims of Houston, Texas; brothers, Stanley Gims Jr. of Groves, Texas, Norther Gims of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Damari Gims, Danyelle Gims, Alana Gims, Blake Gims; great-grandson, Easton Gims; godchildren, DeMarcus Francis, Kori Malbroux Ozane; sister-in-law, Etrulia Gims; uncles, Lawrence Richard (Susan) of Riverside, Calif., MacArthur Gims (Cynthia) of Reading, Mass., Gary Gims of Lake Charles, La.; best friend since childhood, Kim Wallace; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Donald Smith

On March 1, 2019, Donald Smith departed this life at the age of 59. Donald was born Sept. 27, 1959, to the late Junius Smith and Patricia Pringle Smith in Lake Charles, La. As a lifelong resident, Donald worked for the City of Lake Charles Public Works Division for 38 years.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Mary Jane Smith; three children, Nicole Sims, LaTara Temple and David Roy Smith. Donald also had a great love for his stepchildren, Stephanie Abraham, Rita and Christopher Wright. In addition to being a loving husband, father, brother, and stepfather, Donald also leaves to mourn his grandchildren, Da’Nasia Abraham, Keenan Brown, KeVonte’ Dean, Kalyn Martin, Clarence Payne, Jr., Sable Sims, Malayah Smith, Damani Temple, Anthony Wright, Kymani Wright, and Kashamir Wright.

Lula “Lu” Marie Young

BASILE — A dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, Lula had a rich and fulfilling life.

Growing up in Eunice, she married John Austin Young, her high school sweetheart after graduating from Eunice High School.

Lu took great pride in being a career military wife, spending 20 years with John and their children, traveling and living throughout the United States and overseas. She was on her own when John was deployed by the Army, and her strong faith and commitment to family ensured that her family thrived. Although the miles separated them, their commitment to each other was unwavering, and he was able to fulfill his military service because of her constant support, love, faith and dedication. She was a homemaker, the heart of her family, and a strong, independent woman who was very proud of the family she and John created and nurtured.

After retirement, Lu and John established and lived in their home on Grand Pѐrѐ Farm where she made many memories with her family. She was a wonderful cook, enjoyed gardening, and was an avid reader. Time spent with cherished, life-long friends, “The Family,” enriched their lives with much joy and laughter. She also looked forward to her monthly luncheons and bourrѐ with her high school friends. Her smile lit up the world and her caring spirit touched many lives.

Lu was an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Basile, where she taught CCD for a number of years and dedicated time in the adoration chapel.

She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, John Austin Young Sr. of Basile; daughters, Laurice Young, Cathy Young Zion (Harvey), Mona Young Redlich (Lowell), Tina Young-Redlich (Lyle); and son, John Austin Young Jr. (Miho). Grandchildren include Michael McLaughlin (Amber), Joanna Johnson, Zachary Zion, Rachel Zion, Andrew LeBlanc (Jessica), Austin LeBlanc, Emily Barclay (Jason), Ian Redlich (Megan), Caitlin Clark (Jon) Hannah Redlich, Gunther Redlich, Hans Redlich, Sage Young, Theo Young, and Elena Young. She is survived by 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sisters Lou Ann Micochero and Judy Simmons (Frank).

She was predeceased by her father, Julius Young; her mother, Lenis Guillory; and her brother, Ralph Young.

At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Basile on Thursday, March 7, from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again on Friday, March 8, from 8 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Basile. Burial will follow in the St. Augustine Mausoleum with Deacon Gary Gaudin officiating. Deacon Gary Gaudin will recite a Rosary at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
