Winners of the Mardi Gras Shoebox Float Contest have been announced. The event was hosted Saturday by the Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitor Bureau. Individual winners are as follows:

McNeese briefs
McNeese State junior Brittany Kleckley was named Southland Conference’s women’s track and field athletes of the week on Wednesday. She surpassed a height of 11 feet, 3 3/4 inches to win the pole vault.
BATON ROUGE — LSU opened its new softball stadium with a 6-0 win over McNeese State on Wednesday night. The Cowgirls were limited to two hits, both doubles, one from Whitney Corbello and Liz Morvant. Bethany Stefinsky (0-3) took the loss.

Golf tournament
Chairman Steve Blount and committee members Tony Perot, Steve Rossiter and Kevin Cooley look forward to the Southwest Louisiana Association of Life Underwriter’s inaugural benefit Saturday Feb. 26, at Mallard Cove golf course.
The tournament, sponsored by Pellymart and Sports Medicine of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, will benefit Boys and Girls Villages.
DeRidder upset Washington-Marion
DeRidder led by as many as 15 points on its way to shocking Washington-Marion 70-65 in a night of upsets in District 4-4A.
Angelo Melvin scored 26 to lead DeRidder while Cecil Stewart added 16. Seneca Bohannon led the Charging Indians (21-5, 43-2) with 22 points.

Dental Association
Dr. Hunter Mullins of Monroe, president-elect of the Louisiana Dental Association, installed the newly elected officers of the Seventh District Dental Association at its banquet in the Chateau Charles.
Officers are: Dr. Miles Mitchem, president; Dr. Francis T. Lake, president-elect; Dr. Robert Roy of Jennings, vice president; Dr. Southey Hays of Vinton, secretary; and Dr. Harold Schnauder, treasurer.
Delta Gamma meeting
A program on decoupaging, antiquing and paper mache was presented by Mrs. Walter Roberts of South City Paint Co. to members of Delta Gamma Alumnae Chapter during the meeting held in the home of Mrs. Alvin Grabert.
A nominating committee consisting of Mrs. Clayton Kunze, Mrs. William Kraus and Mrs. H.J. Child was appointed to prepare a new slate of officers.

Allies stalled at Anzio, Cassino
ALLIED HQ, Algiers — The American troops at Anzio beachhead are on an exposed coast plain with few natural defenses. They are faced on three sides by a German force of picked division.
German resistance at Cassino has been more effective than had been anticipated. Suicide squads there are fighting with such tenacity that they must be exterminated man by man and this takes time — and costs lives.
