Plans for millage election called off

JENNINGS — The Jeff Davis Parish School Board voted Thursday to scrap plans to call separate millage tax elections next month to fund school improvements at Welsh and Elton schools. The propositions were slated to be on the March 30 ballot, but an outcry from Welsh and Roanoke residents on how the increased millages could hurt businesses and property owners made the school board rethink their decision for both districts.
“This is an opportunity for us to go back and work with the communities as a team to do what is best for our schools,” Superintendent Kirk Credeur said.
A 20-year, $29.5 million bond issue to build a new Jennings Elementary School and a half-cent sales tax renewal to support the project are still on the March 30 ballot. School officials are finalizing plans for the new school and hope to release more details soon, he said.
Residents living in Consolidated School District 1 of Welsh and Roanoke were to decide on a measure that would increase millage rates from 12.25 mills to 36 mills to fund a $14.6 million school improvement project.
