I understand the new golf course to replace the Mallard Cove course will be built off of East McNeese Street. Will it be part of the MorganField community?

City attorney David Morgan said the course, which is still being designed, will be in MorganField, likely off East McNeese Street between Corbina Road and La. 397.

The golf course will be integrated into the development, Morgan said, but the city will own it.

“It will be a municipal, non-private course and will be open to the public just as Mallard Cove is today,” he said in a statement forwarded to The Informer.

The City Council and the Chennault International Airport Authority in December voted to enter into cooperative endeavor agreements with each other and with the developers of MorganField.

Under the agreement, Chennault will pay for construction of a new golf course on land donated by MorganField’s owners and will take ownership of Mallard Cove once the new course is complete.

Chennault will pay $6.6 million to fund construction of the new course and will reimburse the city for up to $3.6 million in utility and other costs over 20 years.

TV lawman killed scores over years

How many bad guys did Matt Dillon dispose of during “Gunsmoke’s” 21-year run?

Over the course of the show’s 635 episodes — airing from 1955 to 1975 — Marshal Matt Dillon, played by James Arness, certainly killed scores of people. But The Informer was unable to find a definitive tally.

Marshall Trimble, a columnist for True West magazine, writes online that “the count ranges from 138 men and seven women to 303 people. If you add in the ones U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon capped in the made-for-TV movies, the total is 407.”

A running joke in The Informer’s house is that “there are no visitors in Dodge City, Kan., because Matt Dillon kills them all.”

The observation was made by The Informer’s son, who years ago summed up the plot of “Gunsmoke” episodes — especially the early ones — like so: “Matt Dillon talks to himself in a cemetery, meets a new person and then gets the new person to try to shoot him so he can shoot them first.”

Arness himself died in his sleep in 2011 at age 88.
