Jordan earns Wally Pontiff Jr. Scholar Athlete Award

Former Barbe star Beau Jordan was honored Monday when LSU head coach Paul Mainieri presented him with the Wally Pontiff Jr. Scholar Athlete award when the team gathered the learn their postseason fate.

At the same time, pitcher/first baseman Austin Bain was awarded the Skip Bertman award as the player who best exemplifies the spirit of the LSU program.

“We’ve established a tradition here to honor two players each season who have distinguished themselves in all facets of our program,” Mainieri said. “Beau and Austin have each been with us for four years, and they epitomize what it means to be an LSU baseball player.

Jordan, who was named to the SEC academic honor roll, graduated from LSU earlier this month with a degree in general business.

Hours after his graduation he hit a grand slam for the game-winning hit that beat Alabama.

He is hitting .300 this season with nine doubles, one triple, a team-high eight homers, 30 RBI and 44 runs.

Bain has seen double duty this season, playing a variety of positions in the field while also coming out of the bullpen to relieve on the mound.

Even though he did not have an at-bat in his first three seasons at LSU, this year he led the SEC with 21  doubles and is hitting .307 with three homers, 42 RBI and 33 runs.

Also on SEC academic honor roll, on the mound he has a 3.00 ERA in 17 relief appearances with six walks and 19 strikeouts in 18 innings.

Jordan’s twin brother Bryce has also already graduated, but after being forced to redshirt with a knee injury last season, will be back next season for his final year of eligibility.””
