We want to grow it even more and make it much better.”

Teams will begin teeing off at the two courses at 8 a.m. Monday, and an awards presentation will begin at 1 p.m.

From there McReynolds will focus his attention on the

annual Tournament of the Stars basketball tournament, which he says has scaled down this year.

“That’s what started it all,” McReynolds said of the basketball tournament. “We’re actually downsized it a bit. We used to have 70 or 80 teams, and it was too much to handle. We’re chopping it down to 24 to 26 teams, and play games at Barbe and Ward 3 (basketball complex) to make it more manageable.”

The events of the basketball tournament will begin Friday, Aug. 10, with a Cops vs. Clergy basketball game that pits local law enforcement officers against religious leaders of the area.

The basketball tournament will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. and will continue Sunday at the same time.

McReynolds said the number of people who come together and selflessly devote their own time make these events a success. This year the Tournament of the Stars scholarship fund will give scholarships to 29 students, it’s most since the tournament’s inception 24 years ago.

“We have so many volunteers donating their time, and we’re not paying anybody,” McReynolds said. “Everybody is doing it voluntarily. That’s what makes it so great, people reaching out and paying it forward with their time.”
