A 28-year-old Lake Charles man used his children as human shields during a drug bust early Wednesday morning, said Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso.

When officers tried to serve a search warrant at a home in the 1600 block of McNabb Street at about 5:30 a.m., Nathaniel J. Conner grabbed his two children — ages 7 and 4 — and held them hostage, Mancuso said.

“I can only imagine not only the terror these children experienced but also the betrayal they felt from the man that was supposed to protect them,” he said.

“I’m proud of my deputies who were able to resolve this situation with no violence and no physical harm to these two young children.”

During the search, officials said, detectives found a Hi-Point rifle that had been reported stolen from the Sulphur Police Department, codeine syrup and drug paraphernalia.

Conner was charged with two counts of second-degree kidnapping, resisting an officer, battery on an officer, drug possession near minors, illegal possession of a firearm, obstruction of justice, drug possession, synthetic-mariuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Sierra R. Wilkerson, 19, was charged with drug possession near minors, illegal firearm possession, obstruction of justice, drug possession, synthetic-marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a stolen firearm.

Judge Robert Wyatt set a $25,000 bond for Conner’s kidnapping charges, and other bonds are pending. Wilkerson’s bond is pending.
