METAIRIE — Authorities in Louisiana say a 21-year-old man who shot his mother to death has been arrested.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto tells news outlets that deputies were initially told that a 42-year-old woman had killed herself in front of her son, Chad McAvoy, and her husband at a home. A coroner identified the victim as Connie McAvoy late Thursday.

Authorities say the woman’s death was initially investigated as a suicide, but it was determined to be a homicide as the investigation progressed.

The sheriff says investigators jailed Chad on a count of second-degree murder. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.

Authorities say the victim’s husband was not facing any criminal charges as of Thursday night.
