Lane closure prompted by subsurface void

Why has one lane of Sampson Street in Westlake been closed for so long without any repairs being made?

“The right lane of Sampson Street (La. 378) near Mulberry Street in Westlake has been closed as a safety precaution due to a break in the subsurface drainage pipe which created a small void under the pavement,” Don Duberville, the state highway department’s regional engineer administrator, wrote Wednesday in an email.

“A contract has been awarded for the repair work. At the time of this writing, preliminary work needed to begin, such as video inspection, ordering materials and scheduling specialty subcontractors, has been completed.”

Duberville said the work is expected to begin the week of Feb. 26 and should be finished by March 30, depending on the weather.

The sides of our parish roads are absolutely filthy. What is the procedure for citizens of Calcasieu Parish to report those who litter?

To report littering, call the Calcasieu Police Jury’s anti-litter hotline, 493-LITR, and relay the license plate number of the offender. Additionally, residents can report litterers online via the parish website, www.cppj.net.

“Littering is a crime. It is expensive to clean up, and it’s even more costly in terms of pride and quality of life. …,” reads the site.

“Don’t let garbage consume our parish. Report litter when you see it happen.”

Louisiana law limits use of fog lights

What is the law on turning fog lights on and off?

Louisiana Revised Statute 32:322 says drivers must turn off fog lights in clear weather when they’re within 500 feet of oncoming cars and when they’re following at least 200 feet behind another vehicle.

The statute imposes the same distance limits on the use of high-beam lights.

The fog lamp restrictions don’t apply “during periods of inclement weather or fog.”
