Take a bow, most-improved players

Most improved golfers for the 2017 season were announced last week by two local courses, Mallard Cove and Gray Plantation.

The improvement is noted in the players’ handicaps, the number they had when they began the year and the number on which they ended the year.

Most improved at Mallard were Fred Wherland for the men and Daphney Tilton for the women.

Wherland lowed his handicap from 16.6 to 8.8 in the 12-month period. Tilton, a local high school standout, went from 9.0 to 3.0.

Runners-up were Scott Lominac, whose handicap went to 2.9, and Theresa Williams, who dropped her handicap to 11.0.

At Gray Plantation, Rusty Montiville was the most improved on the male side followed by Douglas Burnette and Stewart Hunt and Tonya Gibbs was most improved for the women.

Tilton, a member of the Lacassine High golf team, took the top prize in last week’s Texas-Louisiana tournament at The National in Westlake. She shot 80. MacKenzie LeDuff was second with an 82.

Brayden Wright won the boys title with a 74. Runners-up were Austin Stewart and Connor Welsh with 76.

The tour was scheduled to host its third tournament yesterday at the Babe Zaharais Golf Course in Port Arthur, Texas.

The high school schedule begins tomorrow with Teurlings Catholic hosting a tournament at the Wetlands in Lafayette.

One of the local teams slated to be in action is Barbe High, which has added former National and Lake Charles Country Club pro Dave Kaspar as a coach. Kaspar is a volunteer assistant with the team.

Mallard Cove and Gray Plantation sponsored Super Bowl scrambles last week.

At Mallard, defending Lake Charles city champion Gage Primeaux and Grant LaRocca combined to take the title with an 11-under-par 61 score. Second place went to Scott Theriot and Scott Lominac with a 63 and third was taken by Kris Hollan and Cody Soileau with 64.

Second flight honors were taken by the team of Paul Stark and Caleb Fontenot with 68, followed by Huey Hebert and Mason James (69) and Pap Williams and Wilford Carter (70).

The scramble at Gray was by net scores and Bill Stevens and Jim Taylor took first flight honors with 61, while Mike Fusilier and Jon Istre won the second flight with a 57.
