Sonnier repeat winner of PGA assistant pro award

<p class="p1">Lake Charles Country Club assistant pro Greg Sonnier was recently named the Gulf States PGA assistant pro player of the year for the second consecutive year.</p><p class="p1">The Gulf States PGA takes in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi.</p><p class="p1">In the balloting, points are earned by participants in the section’s tournaments. During the 2017 season, Sonnier won the Gulf States assistant pro championship and also earned top-five honors in several other events, including being the low professional in the National Rental Car pro-am.</p><p class="p1">In his third year as the assistant pro at the Country Club, Sonnier competed in the national assistant pro tournament in Port St. Lucie, Florida, tying for 17th place and shooting the second-lowest round (66 the third day) of the event.</p><p class="p1">When he won the Gulf States PGA Player of the Year award in 2016, Sonnier had tied for the top spot in the section’s championship tournament, losing out in sudden-death playoff.</p><p class="p1">Sonnier also serves the Lake Charles Country Club as captain of its team that will attempt to win its third consecutive Louisiana Golf Association team title in a couple of months. That event is scheduled to be played in April at the Beau Chene golf course in Mandeville.</p><hr /><p class="p1"> </p><p class="p1">Reed Fontenot and Paul Garofolo posted top individual efforts on local golf courses last week.</p><p class="p1">Fontenot shot a 3-under-par 69, shooting better than his age by nine strokes. During his round he made seven birdies, seven pars and seven bogeys, birding all of the par-3s.</p><p class="p1">Garofolo made the second hole-in-one in his career at Frasch Park in Sulphur. He knocked in a pitching wedge from 125 yards on the fifth hole.</p><hr /><p class="p1"> </p><p class="p1">Local junior players were in action yesterday at The National in Westlake in a Louisiana-Texas Tour event.</p><p class="p1">It’s the second of a four-tournament event for the winter season. Last week’s 18-hole tournament at Henry Holmberg course in Beaumont, Texas, was postponed and will be made up on Feb. 17.</p><p class="p1">On Feb. 10, the juniors will compete in an event at the Babe Zaharias Golf Course in Port Arthur, Texa.</p><p class="p1">Local juniors will also be getting their high school season underway on Feb. 12 when most of the prep teams will compete in the one-day Teurlings Catholic tournament at the Wetlands in Lafayette.</p><h3 class="p3">Upcoming</h3><p class="p1"><strong>Sunday</strong> — Mallard Cove Super Bowl scramble.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Feb. 17</strong> — Billy LaRocca Memorial par-3 super dog fight, Mallard Cove.</p>
