What is the situation with Lake Charles College Prep? They’ve been in a temporary location for four years. Have they begun building their permanent facility yet? Are there even plans to do so?

Gene Thibodeaux, president of the charter school’s board, said a permanent Lake Charles College Prep facility — one built to house 600 students — has been in the works for about three years.

“Land has been identified, an architect has been employed, preliminary designs have been analyzed, and funding has been secured contingent upon a successful ruling from the Louisiana Supreme Court on a lawsuit filed by various school boards (including Calcasieu Parish School Board) and teacher unions,” Thibodeaux wrote in an email.

“That lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of public funding for Type 2 charters like Lake Charles College Prep.”

He said the high court’s ruling is expected soon.

Some staff members in loan program

Are staff members and the children of Congress members exempt from having to repay college loans?

No law offers such blanket exemption for members of Congress, their staffs or lawmakers’ children.

Some staff members take part in loan-repayment programs.

But the programs, like those for other federal employees, feature a payment cap and stipulate that participants remain on the job for a set number of years.

Neither members of Congress nor their families are eligible for the programs.
