Junior golfers win tournament in Texas

The area’s junior golfers continued to make good showings in tournaments last week, especially Jace Benoit, MacKenzie LeDuff and Austin Stewart.
Benoit and LeDuff were the winners in the Texas-Louisiana junior tournament at Frasch Park in Sulphur, while Stewart finished third in a Texas Junior Golf Tour event.

The tournament at Frasch was the first of four outings for junior players on the Texas-Louisiana tour. The second event was played yesterday at the Henry Holmberg course in Beaumont, Texas, while The National in Westlake will host a tournament on Saturday and the finale will be played Feb. 10 at the Babe Zaharais layout in Port Arthur, Texas.
With Benoit and LeDuff leading the way the Louisiana team took a 4-3 lead over the Texans in overall series competition.
Benoit won the boys 16- to 18-year-age event by shooting a 74 while teammates Matthew Houston and Connor Welsh tied for second with 76. Also in the top five was Brett Ardoin with an 82.
LeDuff won the girls’ major competition with a 78.
In the boys 14-15 age category, Luke Hightower shot 88 for the top spot, while in 12-13, Collin Jones took first with an 80.

Stewart, who is a junior at Sulphur High, placed third in the TJGT event played on the Black course in Cypress, Texas, last weekend by shooting rounds of 79-75 for a 154.
The finish qualified him for the TJGT championship invitational, which will be played Feb. 10-11 at Horseshoe Bay in Austin, Texas.
Also entered in the tournament in the girls division are Brooke Tyree and Daphney Tilton.
The boys will play the Slick Rock course at Horseshoe Bay while the girls will play Apple Rock.

The boys team will be in action Feb. 10-11 in the Kingwood (Texas) High School tournament on the Forest course. In the opening round the squad will be paired with the top two teams in the Houston area — Kingwood and Clear Springs high schools.

Mallard Cove has scheduled a Super Bowl two-person scramble for Sunday. Tee times will run from 10 a.m. to noon with a maximum of 30 teams. Players can sign up at the pro shop.
