Deputy chief: Report problems to police

On Dec. 1 and 2, vehicles parked on the new walking track between 12th and Seventh streets for Hamilton Christian events, running into new trees just planted.

In any other city, there would be tow trucks and tickets given out. The citizens could not utilize the track for two days due to the traffic pulling onto the track to park.

Who can I contact to preserve our track?

Lake Charles Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said residents should call police anytime they see something they think could be illegal. The number is 491-1311.

State nepotism law has some exceptions

What is the state law on nepotism?

The law is Louisiana R.S. 42:1119.

From a state ethics board summary on the statute:

“Members of the immediate family of an agency head may not be employed in the agency.”

“Members of the immediate family of a member of a governing authority or the chief executive of a governmental entity may not be employed in the governmental entity. The term ‘governing authority’ includes parish councils, police juries, school boards, town councils, boards of aldermen, etc.”

“Note that the application of this restriction is not affected by whether the agency head, chief executive or governing authority member has authority over or actually participates in the hiring decision — such family members are simply ineligible for employment.”

The summary says exceptions include people “employed in violation of this rule continuously since April 1, 1980”; those employed for a year before the family member becomes the head of an agency; “employment of a school teacher who is a member of the immediate family of the superintendent or a school board member as long as the family member is certified to teach or is temporarily authorized to teach while pursuing certification”; and people working as volunteer firefighters.

For more information, call the ethics board at 225-219-5600 or 800-842-6630.
