The National led all the way in winning the recent Lake Charles Cup match.

The Westlake golf club owned a 4 1/2-point lead after the opening round and wound up winning by 8 1/2 points with a 34.5 total. Mallard Cove was second with 26 points and defending champion Gray Plantation scored 17 points.

The tournament pits teams from the three courses in Ryder Cup-style play on different courses in two days. It has been played yearly since 2002, except 2005 when Hurricane Rita came through.

The National club pro Eric Kaspar said the victory was a complete team effort.

“Everyone scored at least one point, either the first day or the second,” he said. “We really enjoyed how the tournament was set up and we were pleased that we won on neighboring courses.”

Last week the first round was played at Gray Plantation and the second and final round at Mallard.

Next year The National will host one of the rounds in Westlake.

Leading the victory were Lawrence David, Bill Stevens and Russell LeBlanc. All three went 4-0 in the event.

It was the fourth Cup championship for The National, which also won in 2015, 2012 and 2011.

Mallard Cove’s Derek Smith led the professionals with a 3-1 mark. Gray’s Tyler Kuhn was 2-0 but only played the first day.

Patty Fredericks had an interesting round at the Lake Charles Country Club last week.

She made a hole-in-one on the 14th hole, using a driver from 127 yards out.

After what had happened to her on the No. 3 hole, she might have felt that she was owed an ace.

On No. 3, she hit her tee shot into the water. She teed it up again and knocked that shot into the hole for what was a par.

Also posting holes-in-one last week were Winkey Phillips and Paul Garofolo, both at Frasch Park in Sulphur.

Phillips aced the 110-yard seventh hole and went on to shoot 79.

Garofolo used a sand wedge for his ace on the 95-yard ninth hole and finished with a 69. It was both the first ace of his career and the first time for him to break 70.
