BATON ROUGE — LSU’s 27-23 rally win from 20 points down over Auburn Saturday wasn’t the Tigers’ biggest ever.

But it was the biggest ever comeback in a Southeastern Conference game in Tiger Stadium since at least 1949, which is far as the school has reliable records.

The only other biggest upset in a conference game came in Jackson, Mississippi, against Ole Miss in 1977 when the Tigers trailed 21-0 before rallying for a 28-21 victory.

The biggest-ever comeback was 2008 against Troy was the biggest in school history, as the Tigers trailed that game 31-3 before getting untracked for a victory.

THIN LINE: LSU was missing both starting offensive t ackles as neither K.J. Malone or Toby Weathersby dressed out. Malone, in fact, was on crutches.

But the Tigers stopped just short of starting three true freshmen on the offensive line.

Ed Ingram was in his normal spot at RG and Saahdiq Charles took Weathersby’s place at LT. But sophomore Adrian Magee was in Malone’s place. True freshman Austin Deculus also played at tackle.

Fullback J.D. Moore and DB John Battle were back after practicing sparingly this past week.

O FOR THE CENTURY: Auburn won’t have much better chance, but the War Eagles still haven’t won in Tiger Stadium since lighting up victory cigars in the end zone after the 1999 win. The streak is nine straight for LSU.

DEPTH CHART: DE Frank Herron was dressed out and played for the first time all season. It was never revealed why he didn’t play in the first six games.

TACKLE HUNTER: LSU LB Devin White, who was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week with 13 tackles last week, topped that with 15 Saturday, including a sack and another for a loss.

WIDE RUNNER: The Tigers’ first TD, scored by Stephen Sullivan, the was the third rushing TD by a wide receiver this season. All by different receivers.

STILL CHAMPS: At halftime LSU honored its 2007 national championship team, including former head coach Les Miles. The Mad Hatter might have gotten the biggest ovation of all when the team was introduced. RB Derrius Guice gave Miles a big hug as the Tigers were coming back on the field.

WELCOME BACK: The ’07 championship team made the traditional walk down the hill of Stadium Drive before the game. They had four of the team’s stars carrying a banner out front — DT Glenn Dorsey, FS Craig Steltz, RB Jacob Hester and QB Matt Flynn.

TITTLE TOWN: LSU had a replica of Y.A. Tittle’s old No. 25 Tigers jersey from the 1940s among those lined up among the modern ones in the dressing room. The 90-year-old former Tigers and NFL Hall of Famer died last Sunday night in Atherton, California.

BUT THE HUMIDITY WAS LOW: The 90-degree temperature at kickoff was the hottest home game in October since the Tigers started keeping the records in 1965.

HOOPS: LSU’s new basketball coach Will Wade addressed the student section during the informal football warm-ups an hour or so before the game looking for their support. The basketball Tigers threw T-shirts to the students while he talked.

FLIPPING: LSU captains were RB Darrell Williams, OG Garrett Brumfield, DE Rashard Lawrence, C Will Clapp, LB Devin White and WR Russell Gage.
