Four ball event closes out state schedule

State championship tournaments for the men came to a close last week with locals Ben Holcombe and Glenn Granger taking runner-up honors for the second consecutive year.
The duo competed in the senior four ball on the Atchafalaya Golf Course and placed second in super senior competition, posting a 67-67—134 score.

It’s been a good year for area golfers in state competition.
Tops on the list has been Sulphur High senior Brooke Tyree who won the women’s state four ball with Carly Whittington and took the junior amateur crown for the second straight year.
The McNeese State Cowgirls golf team member Riley Issac won the state women’s amateur crown and Pam Fossett and Chris Stout were members of the women’s team that claimed the Tri-State championship.
For the men, the Lake Charles Country Club won the club team championship for the second consecutive year, taking the title by 15 shots at L’Auberge. Club assistant pro Greg Sonnier captained that squad that also included Hank Shaheen, Doug Quienalty, John Henry Faulk, Robby Going and Billy Gabbert.
Gage Primeaux, the reigning Lake Charles city champion and a top contender in the upcoming Sulphur city tournament, placed sixth in the Louisiana Amateur that was played at the Country Club of Louisiana.
Shaheen tied for third in the Mid-Amateur while Matt Nicholas was seventh and Gabbert 10th. Gabbert also finished seventh in the senior am at Southern Trace.

Nicholas and Charles Karam tied for ninth in the men’s four ball at English Turn and Eric Brown tied for sixth in the state junior championship.
Three players placed in the top 10 in the recent men’s net amateur at Koasati Pines in Kinder with Bryan McCullough tying for fifth and Ricky Norwood and Rene Durflinger tying for ninth place.
The only matches remaining are the junior River Cup, which is taking place this weekend at Squire Creek in Ruston and features Tyree and Daphney Tilton and the women’s mid-am and senior tournament that will be played Oct. 20-22 at Le Triomphe in Broussard.

Roger Faulk and Reed Fontenot claimed senior titles during the Lake Charles Country Club’s annual tournament last week.
Faulk took the senior title with a 79-71—150 score while Fontenot won the super senior crown in a playoff with Mike Veron. Fontenot and Veron both shot 144.
Flight winners were Tim Boreing (second flight, 84-79—163) and Jim Mitchell (third flight, 88-86—174). Taking net honors were Chuck Macpherson (first flight), Joe Landry (second flight) and Graham Portus (third flight).
Joe Bradford was the super senior flight net winner.

Primeaux teamed with Grant LaRocca to win the recent double handicap four ball at Mallard Cove. The two played with a 0 handicap and shot a 10-under-par 62.
The other gross winners were Curtis Cole and Carl Cole with a 70 in the second flight.
Low net winners were Daphney Tilton and John Tilton in the first and Ron DeVille and Pat Hartwell in the second.

Mike Durio made a hole-in-one on the 11th hole at Mallard Cove last week by knocking in an 8-iron from 112 yards. It was the second ace in his career. His first was also on the 11th hole.
Also making an ace at Mallard was Boo O’Quinn. He collected his during a recent tournament and it also came on No. 11.
