Old-school Saturday afternoon games

Published 7:17 pm Saturday, September 2, 2017

No need to stay up late for live entertainment tonight, as Tropical Storm Harvey’s passage through the area resulted in seven high school football games being moved back to today.

Highlighting the schedule are a pair of neutral-site games, Leesville vs. Washington-Marion at Westlake (1 p.m.) and Sam Houston vs. St. Louis at Sulphur (2 p.m.), as well as a home game for Iowa, which will host Crowley at 3 p.m.

Also on the day’s schedule are Merryville at Rosepine and Lake Charles College Prep at Pickering, both at 1 p.m.; Iota at Basile at 5 p.m.

The Wampus Cats and Charging Indians were district foes the past two years, splitting a pair of games, with Leesville winning 47-14 last season. Each team has a fresh face in the backfield, with Leesville’s Andrew Coker taking over at tailback for McNeese State signee Cory McCoy after playing receiver last season. W-M freshman JaThan Royal gave the team a spark in last week’s jamboree, gaining 32 yards on three rushes and two receptions.

W-M head coach Freddie Harrison said the Charging Indians had plenty of positives in its jamboree game, a loss to Welsh.

“I thought we moved pretty fast on offense,” he said. “The freshman running back played well and the offensive line played well.

“Defensively, the back end played well, the secondary and linebackers. We need the line to play better. We played well in all phases of special teams. Now it is time to put it all together. I know (Leesville head coach Robert) Causey is going to put a good product on the field.

“Looking at the film, their offensive and defensive lines are their strength. We are going to have to win the battle of the trenches.”

Sam Houston and St. Louis have established an opening-week rivalry, meeting in the first week for the seventh consecutive season. The game will mark the head coaching debut of Broncos head coach Chad Paulk.

Paulk said his team needs to score to minimize the effects of the traditionally strong Saints special teams units.

“St. Louis does a great job on special teams,” Paulk said. “Anyone that plays them understands that. They have the best kickers around. We are going to have to sustain long drives and put the ball in the end zone. Our defense matches up well with St. Louis. If we are scoring, the special teams can’t hurt us.”

While the Broncos will have a new look, the Saints return a host of starters, including quarterback Bailey Hardy and running back Jaleel Goodwin, who scored on a 78-yard run against Sulphur in last week’s jamboree.

Tommy Johns will debut as Iowa head coach. He is among a few new faces for the Yellow Jackets, who return 17 starters, including quarterback Dyami Huntsberry and all state safety Darius Daniels. Iowa beat the Gents 29-28 in last year’s opener.

Crowley’s entire offensive backfield — quarterback Paul Dugar and running backs Keith Wilson and Donald Francis — return from last year.
