Harvey prompts schedule change

Due to the threat of heavy rains this weekend from Tropical Depression Harvey, the SPOT Therapy/Billy Navarre Chevrolet Lake Area Jamboree schedule has been condensed to one day — today.
Harvey, which could potentially make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane somewhere along the central or southeast Texas coast, could bring has much as 15 to 20 inches of rain to some parts of Southwest Louisiana, said Roger Erickson of the National Weather Service in Lake Charles.
“Looking at it (Harvey), there is a possibility of some local evacuations,” Sulphur High School head football coach Jeff Wainwright said. “We are looking at a lot of rain possibly coming in Friday. We wanted to make sure that everybody got a chance to get some time in. We still realize there may be some rain issues, but this way we hopefully minimize the damage.”
The jamboree was scheduled to feature six games over two days, but all games will now be played today at Sulphur High School’s Matt Walker Memorial Stadium, which boasts an artificial turf field.
“Our field is the best field around even if we do have to play with some type of rain,” Wainwright said.
Each game will be 30 minutes long with a running clock.
“All the coaches were in favor of shortening the time and letting everybody get to play,” Wainwright said. “The scrimmage will be minimized, but at this point you want to get your special teams on the field.”
The first game kicks off at 4 p.m. with the last game scheduled to start at 9 p.m.
