Tyree, Whittington win LGA women’s four ball crown

<p class="p1">Teenagers Brooke Tyree and Carly Whittington ran roughshod over the field in winning last week’s Louisiana Women’s Golf Association four ball championship.</p><p class="p1">The duo — Tyree a senior at Sulphur High and Whittington a sophomore at Lacassine High — won the title by 11 shots, posting a 60-65—125 score over the Koasati Pines course in Kinder.</p><p class="p1">It was the second state title this summer for Tyree who last month won the Louisiana girls junior crown. </p><p class="p1">Both Tyree and Whittington posted career-best scores. Tyree set the women’s course record with a 10-under-par 62 the first day, and Whittington came up with a personal low of 75 the second day.</p><p class="p1">Taking runner-up honors were Olivia Hansen and Riley Isaac, both members of the McNeese State golf team. They shot 75-71—136.</p><p class="p1">Other area players in the tournament were the duos of Pam Fossett and Chris Stoute, who placed fourth (72-76—148), Brooke Duzan and Sandra Smith with a 79-75—154 for seventh place and Becky Meaux and Sharon Berken with 79-84—163 for 10th.</p><p class="p2">l</p><p class="p1">Whittington recently placed third in the University of Louisville Midwest Regional Invitational. She posted what had been her career low, a 75, until the four ball event.</p><p class="p1">With her third-place finish she qualified for the Amelia Lewis girls national championship at Champions Gate Country Club in Florida, Dec. 2-3.</p><p class="p2">l</p><p class="p1">The Westlake men’s city championship will run Friday through Sunday with Neithan Allen attempting to defend his title.</p><p class="p1">The full field wasn’t listed as of Thursday, but The National’s head pro and tournament director Eric Kaspar said he expected an outstanding field, adding that many of the top players in the area might sign up this week.</p><p class="p1">One who won’t be in the field is Lake Charles city champion Gage Primeaux who will be away on vacation.</p><p class="p1">This will be the second of the three local city tournaments. The final one — the Sulphur city — will be played Oct. 7-8 with Matt Nicholas as the defending champion.</p><p class="p2">l</p><p class="p1">The Westlake women’s city tournament is expected to wind up today while last week the men’s senior and super senior event took place with Bill Stevens and Gerald Quarles successfully defending their titles.</p><p class="p1">Stevens shot 66-69—135 to win by four strokes over Jim Taylor (70-69—139) while Quarles posted a 75-81—156 to win in a playoff over Steve Schiamara who shot 71-85—156.</p><p class="p1">Guy Stansel won the first flight (78-75—153) with Jud Cain second (79-78—157) and Clark Cormier took the second flight (84-74—158) with Jack Fontenot (87-84—171) second.</p><p class="p2">l</p><p class="p1">Hank Shaheen was the top local performer in last week’s Louisiana Mid-Amateur played at Bayou Oaks-City Park in New Orleans. He finished in a tie for third place with 69-70—139.</p><p class="p1">Other top-15 finishes had Nicholas in seventh place with 70-71—141, Billy Gabbert in a 10th-place tie with 74-70—144 and Robby Going tying for 14th place with 70-75—145.</p><p class="p2">l</p><p class="p1">The fifth annual J.T. Mitchell Memorial will be played tomorrow at the Lake Charles Country Club. This is a fundraiser for the Southwest Louisiana Junior Golf Association.</p><p class="p1">The event is a three-person scramble with a $375 entry fee per team. Contact Derek Smith at Mallard Cove for information.</p><p class="p2">l</p><p class="p1">The McNeese State men’s golf program scheduled a four-man scramble called “The Cowboy Rally” for Sept. 29 at the Lake Charles Country Club.
