Northrop Grumman’s Lake Charles facility offered tuberculosis testing for employees Wednesday after one worker was diagnosed with a “suspected case” of TB, said company spokesman Mike White.
The worker told his employer about the diagnosis on July 29, prompting a “rapid response” from company leaders, White said.
He said company officials reached out to state and federal public health agencies for advice on containing the issue. They were told that the risk of TB spreading and becoming active was low, White said.
Northrop Grumman has since offered private and group information sessions about TB to employees through partnerships with Prime Medical and the Calcasieu Parish Office of Public Health.
The company provided on-site TB testing administered by the parish’s public health office Wednesday. White said Northrop Grumman will keep in contact with agencies to make sure its employees aren’t at risk.
“We have continued to work with these groups to ensure we are taking the appropriate actions for our employees, our customers and the community of Lake Charles,” he said.
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that spreads through the air from one person to another. Symptoms include coughing up blood or sputum, chest pain, fatigue, fever and weight loss.
Most TB cases are latent infections, which aren’t contagious and don’t have symptoms. But about 5 percent to 10 percent of latent cases become active and can be fatal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
