Boardwalk extension on list of city projects

Does the city ever plan to rebuild the boardwalk?

Yes, said Mike Huber, city planning director.

“Improvements along the lake’s edge have been included in the city’s Capital Improvement Plan,” Huber said in a statement forwarded to The Informer.

“The scope of the improvements will be determined by the budget and in conjunction with other lakefront development proposals that are now being considered by the city.”

Downtown and lakefront projects listed in the Capital Improvement Plan, which covers 2017-2023, along with their estimated costs and when they would begin:

Civic Center facility improvements — $500,000; ongoing.

Civic Center locker rooms and second-floor meeting rooms — $600,000; ongoing.

Replacement of Civic Center elevators — $500,000; ongoing.

Bord du Lac Park amphitheater — $3.5 million; in the plan’s third to fifth year.

Civic Center eastside entrance (lighting, landscaping, fountain upgrade, irrigation) — $500,000; in the plan’s third to fifth year.

Civic Center westside festival plaza (Bord du Lac Boulevard) — $3.3 million; in the plan’s third to fifth year. 

Lakeshore Drive electrical upgrade and vendor stations — $150,000; in the plan’s third to fifth year.

Parking garage for the downtown and Civic Center area — $10 million; in the plan’s third to fifth year.

La. 385 pedestrian and bike trail — $1.3 million; ongoing.

Clarence Street (utilities and landscaping) — $250,000; ongoing.

Lakeshore Drive traffic calming phase 1 (restriping and signals) — $350,000; in the plan’s third to fifth year.

Gill Street — $100,000; in the plan’s third to fifth year.

Lakeshore Drive traffic calming phase 2 (medians, turn lanes, lights) — $2.2 million; in the plan’s third to fifth year.

East Civic Center Drive connector — $1.5 million; in the plan’s sixth or later year.

North Civic Center Drive connector — $1.5 million; in the plan’s sixth or later year.

South Civic Center Drive-Kirby Street connector — $1.5 million; in the plan’s sixth or later year.

Pine Street and Pryce Street connector, including storm drainage — $2.5 million; $1.5 million; in the plan’s sixth or later year.

Pithon Coulee walking trail — $1.25 million; in the plan’s sixth or later year.

North Bord du Lac Drive reconfiguring — $1.5 million; in the plan’s sixth or later year.

Beautification of interstate exchanges — $250,000; ongoing.

Veterans Memorial Park — $240,000; ongoing.

Major corridor beautification program (Ryan and Broad streets, La. 14 and Prien Lake Road) — $1 million; in the plan’s first or second year.

Christmas lighting for downtown — $200,000; in the plan’s first or second year.

North Beach restroom repair — $120,000; in the plan’s first or second year.

Pinnacle site work — $5 million; in the plan’s third to fifth year.

Additional downtown streetscaping — $5million; in the plan’s third to fifth year.

Harbor and marina — $20 million; in the plan’s sixth or later year.

Shoreline stabilization and boardwalk extension (from the seawall to the Pinnacle site) — $5 million; in the plan’s sixth or later year.

A final note: The city and the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury will split the cost of the interstate exchange beautification project.

The work — involving landscape changes at the Cove Lane roundabout and the Interstate 10 exit at Ryan Street — will cost $180,000. The city will pay $135,000; the parish will cover up to $45,000.
