Judge to begin questioning jurors for Daigle trial

State district court Judge Guy Bradberry will question potential jurors Sept. 7-8 for the upcoming first-degree murder trial of Kevin Daigle, who is accused of fatally shooting state trooper Steven Vincent in August 2015.
Daigle, 55, is set to stand trial Sept. 18. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Bradberry said 400 potential jurors are being subpoenaed for questioning, which will be in Benton, in Bossier Parish.
The judge earlier granted a change of venue for the trial but only for jury selection. Jurors will be brought to Calcasieu Parish for the evidence part of the trial.
Bradberry ruled earlier this week that evidence of any past felonies or misdemeanors committed by Daigle could be allowed as evidence. The
defense argued that only felonies were admissible.
Bradberry said Daigle’s misdemeanor convictions and statements made in connection to them are “extremely relevant to show his character and propensities,” including battery of an ex-girlfriend’s son and his threatening the life of a former Welsh police officer who investigated the incident.
In a hearing Friday, prosecutor Cynthia Killingsworth said the prosecution had “filed a response to discovery” and hadn’t yet received anything from the defense.
Defense attorney Kyla Romanach said she was waiting on some information that had been requested regarding Daigle but hadn’t received it.
“We have been working with experts, but we just don’t have all of the information we have requested and we do need it,” Romanach said. “I’d like to ask if the court can help us expedite this process.”
Bradberry said, “To the extent that this court can assist with that, we will.”
He set Aug. 14 as the next status hearing for Daigle and said he expects there will be no delays ahead of the trial.
