Retro sci-fi film screenings and a 1950s car show will be available 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday during Sci-Fi Saturday at The Mines Theater, 121 East Napoleon St. in Sulphur.
The event, coordinated by The Mines Theater and POPninja.net, will feature cliffhanger chapters of the 1952 movie serial “Radar Men from the Moon,” as well as a 3-D screening of “Robot Monster” — a 1953 film about a robot who unexpectedly falls in love during his mission to destroy humanity.
Artists like Danny Allain, Boon Businelli and Randy Ensley will make sketch cards and commissioned art throughout the event. Residents can also take in the classic car show and a sci-fi memorabilia display by the Cajun Picker.
Pictures with Robot Monster, a costume contest, and a costume and prop-building tutorial by the 501st Legion are scheduled for select times. Food vendors and concessions will be on hand.
Event coordinator Patrick Bennet said his goal is for people to get a glimpse of what going to the movies was like in the 1950s.
“It was more of an event back then,” Bennet said. “Nowadays, you just go to the movies and you go home, but in the ’50s when you’d go to movies you might see a couple of serial chapters, watch a cartoon and then watch one or two movies.”
Bennet, who has made films since the 1980s and organizes the Lake Charles Film Festival, said he enjoys the gimmicky style of 1950s sci-fi films and hopes others will appreciate their unique aesthetic.
“It’s kind of like stepping back in time,” Bennet said. “It’s just a nostalgic event.”
He said the event came together almost on its own as organizers pooled their resources. They decided to start off small, he said, with just a four-hour event but may lengthen it in the future.
