City, parish to split cost of road widening

What are the plans for widening West Prien Lake Road between the Cove Lane traffic circle and Ihles Road, and what are the plans for widening Ihles Road from West Prien Lake to Country Club?

West Prien Lake Road from the Cove Lane roundabout south to Ihles Road will be widened beginning in 2019, said John Cardone, Lake Charles city administrator.

The project, now in the preliminary design stage, will cost about $22 million, and city and Calcasieu Parish officials plan to spit the costs, Cardone said.

“The road will be widened to accommodate the increased traffic volume that this area is experiencing. This road project will also include water, sewer, underground storm drainage and a walking/bike path,” he said in a statement forwarded to The Informer.

“Sale Road will also be widened from the intersection of W. Prien Lake Road east to Rue Chan Ann. Sale Road improvements will include drainage and sidewalks.”

Cardone said Ihles Road from West Prien Lake to Country Club Road will be widened after the first project is completed. The work, he said, will include drainage improvements and sidewalks.

Officials have submitted the project to the Metropolitan Planning Commission’s Technical Advisory Committee for funding approval, and money for the work could be available in fiscal year 2019, Cardone said.

If the funding is approved, he said, city and parish officials will recommend that the City Council and Police Jury split the costs of the 20 percent local match.


Mayor’s Action Line takes complaints

When will something be done about the deplorable conditions in the 2000 and 2100 blocks of Commercial Street in north Lake Charles?

City officials said an inspector went to the area but found no property standards violations.

“Residents may contact the Mayor’s Action Line with specific complaints at 491-1346. The Mayor’s Action Line processes and tracks inquiries, comments and complaints addressed to the city of Lake Charles by its residents,” said Matt Young, city spokesman.

“Each call is entered into our computer system and referred to the appropriate department/division. The department/division then has three working days to investigate and respond to the caller with what steps can be or have been taken to resolve the issue.”
