WELSH — Residents say that postcards labeling two Welsh aldermen as terrorists are disturbing.

The postcards, which have a photograph of Aldermen Andrea King and Colby Perry, with the word “terrorist” written under it, were recently mailed to some residents.

The postcards also read, “The Future of Welsh is in Jeopardy. Get Involved in Your Local Government.” It further reads: “Remove Golliwog King and Despicable Me Perry.”

The photo of King and Perry sitting side by side was taken during the swearing-in ceremony for the new council in December.

King said Tuesday that the postcard is upsetting and disturbing. “This is not a joke,” she said. “It’s racial slander.”

King said she didn’t receive a postcard, but has heard from several residents who received one in the mail, including a resident who took the postcard to King at work Tuesday.

“Everyone has their right and opinion, but if this comes because the way I have voted as a councilman it is wrong,” she said. “It is sad that it has come to this and that people have so little to do with their time … Maybe they should focus on going out and helping the community.”

Perry said he is angry about the postcards. “But I understand when you are in the public you have to accept criticism, but at the same time this has gone too far,” he said.

Perry said he and King may have different ideas, but that they both ran for the office with the best interest of the town at heart.

“There’s division and each side has their own reason, but let’s sit down and move forward,” he said.

Mayor Carolyn Louviere said she was made aware of the postcards Tuesday after a resident called her. She called the postcards shocking.
