As I remember, the city had a $25 million surplus when Mayor Roach was first elected. What is that balance now?

“The city of Lake Charles maintains a portion of its operating revenue in a general fund balance reserve. These funds can be used to address revenue shortfalls or unanticipated expenditures like responding to a natural disaster,” said city Finance Director Karen Harrell.

Starks, unlike towns, not a municipality

I’m calling about the article in the American Press on Sunday, May 21, regarding the gambling revenue. I’m from Starks, and I’m just wondering why all these towns got money in Calcasieu Parish, but Starks was not listed.

Starks is an unincorporated community and so lacks a central administrative body; the areas listed in Sunday’s column are bona fide municipalities, with corporate limits and an elected administration.

How the Calcasieu Parish Gaming Revenue District distributed the $32,029,505 it collected from the local riverboats and Delta Downs’ slots operation in 2016:

Calcasieu Parish Police Jury — $10,629,906.

Lake Charles — $10,750,929.

Port of Lake Charles — $3,970,457.

Calcasieu Parish School Board — $2,710,431.

McNeese State University — $1,355,216.

Sowela Technical Community College — $451,738.

Sulphur — $861,423.

DeQuincy — $393,301.

Vinton — $392,674.

Iowa — $386,786.

Westlake — $126,644.
