Lopez kicked in the door to his parents’ bedroom May 17 and verbally and physically threatened them while armed with a semi-automatic handgun, said Jeff Davis Chief Deputy Chris Ivey.

Lopez also threw a flag and flagpole and hit his father, who armed himself with a semi-automatic handgun and fired one shot at his son, wounding him in the right shoulder, Ivey said. Deputies were called to the residence after Carolyn Lopez reported that her husband, Derwin, had shot her son in the shoulder, Ivey said.

Deputies arrived to find Derwin Lopez rendering aid to his son, he said. Two firearms were secured, Ivey said.

Deputies have been called to the Lopez residence on Hines Road on three prior occasions because of the son’s actions, he said.
