State law dictates police jury responsibilities

What are the duties of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury? Are there any laws governing how the Police Jury spends the taxpayers’ money?
State law directs police juries — which are features in 39 of the state’s 64 parishes — to build and maintain parish roads, bridges and drainage features; regulate traffic on parish roads; provide court-related facilities; regulate subdivisions and zoning; maintain parish parks; and regulate public safety and health matters, said Parish Administrator Bryan Beam.
Additionally, he said, the Calcasieu Police Jury oversees the juvenile justice office and the Burton Coliseum Complex.
“The Police Jury is legally bound to spend its tax revenues as authorized and designated in each tax election call,” Beam wrote in an mail.
“In addition, the Police Jury must comply with various state and federal regulations with regard to all spending and financial reporting. Further, the Police Jury must formally approve an annual budget that is subject to public review prior to formal approval.”
CPSB: Clean buses priority all year
As a grandparent, I would like to know, with the cold and flu problems we have had this year, what precautions are in place for cleaning school buses that bring students back and forth to school each day?
Bus drivers must keep their buses clean, and the district’s driver handbook repeats that mandate multiple times.
“Those responsibilities include ensuring that areas with higher germ accumulation are clean,” school system spokeswoman Holly Holland wrote in an email. “This is the process followed by drivers throughout the school year and not just during cold/flu season.”
From the handbook, which can be downloaded at the Calcasieu Parish School Board’s website:
“The prevention of infectious diseases on the school bus depends on basic principles of cleanliness and hygiene. Frequent hand washing is essential in the prevention and transmission of disease. The transmission of infectious disease on the school bus may be further prevented by using standard procedures to maintain both personal cleanliness and cleanliness of the school bus.
“Every school bus in Calcasieu Parish should be equipped with antibacterial spray and absorbent powder.”
